FROM THE COUNCIL
Since the last issue of "Smoke Signals", the Tribal Council
has made considerable progress toward reaching our ultimate
goal of re-establishing the relationship between the United
States Government and The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde.
April 3, 1981, members of the Council and Mr. Don Wharton, Ore.
Legal Services Native American Program, met with House Represen
tative Paul Hanneman and Senator Dell Isham, The purpose of the
meeting vas to discuss the House -Joint Memorial 12 which will be
re-introduced and then will be a Senate Joint Memorial. This
Memorial asks the U.S. Congress to formally repudiate the Termi
nation Act of 1954 At the April 3 meeting, members of the Council
and Mr. Wharton clarified our position in regards to the Memorial.
After discussing and clarifying the intention of the Memorial,
Senator Isham and Represenative Hanneman agreed to sponsor the
Memorial. Their support is very important to us in our endeavors.
We appreciate and thank them for the time they took from their
busy schedules to meet with us.
Other tribes endorsing the Memorial are: Klamath Tribe, Cow Creek
Band of Upper Umpquas, Coos-Lower Umpqua-Siuslaw, and Coquille.
Other sponsors of the bill include Senators Potts,. McFarland,
Jernstedt, Kitzhaber, Kulongoske, and Ripper. Other House sponsors
are Representatives Bradbury, Brogoiti, Grannell, Kerans, Markham,
Priestly, and Rijken.
As we continue our efforts, the support and input from our tribal
members will play an important role in our achieving Restoration.
In future issues, meeting dates will be published and tribal members
should attend if at all possible. We realize that travel expenses
are costly. Therefore, we will do our best to arrange these meetings
at a time when members living out of the area will be traveling to
Grand Ronde for other purposes e.g. Memorial Day. This won't always
be possible, but the importance will assess the need to be present
at other times.
