AGNES MERCIER ELDER OF THE MONTH
Ninety year old Agnes Mercier has been chosen elder of the month.
Agnes has spent her lifetime in the Grand Ronde area. Agnes is the
Mother of five sons, three of whom are still living, Hubert, Harold,
and Joe, one daughter, Geraldine, Grandmother of 20 grandchildren,
34 great grandchildren, and 20 great great grandchildren.
Agnes' Mother was of the Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde and
her Father was of Spanish descent.
Mrs. Mercier recalls working very hard all her life and liking
it. She states also that people nowdays are alot lazier than they
were long ago. Agnes says that she likes doing everything, but her
favorite hobby was horseback riding. She always likes to keep busy.
When she was asked about the reservation long ago she said it
was much as it is today, but more spread out and there were fewer
people. .
In our closing question, " if you could change anything in the
community what would it be?", she replied "I wish that there were
fewer people and that things would go back to the old way."
Jonny George and Delia Fischer conducted the interview and pre
sented Mrs. Mercier with a choker made by the Title IV Indian Ed
ucation youth. Jonny and Delia were very much impressed with Agnes
and marveled at her youthfulness.
GRADUATING SENIORS HONORED
Delia Fischer, Phyllis Thomas, Duke Kimsey, John Mercier, and
Jonny George, Indian students, joined the graduating class at
Willamina High School. The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde are
especially proud of these students and are confident that they will
continue to be an asset to their tribe and community.
TRIBAL REPRESENTATIVE ATTENDS SEMINAR
The Confederated Tribes of Grand Ronde sent a representative
to the Technical Assistence Seminar held at Kah-nee-ta June 6th.
The Seminar was held to provide assistence in the "how to" of
grant writing. The Seminar was one part of a four part program,
this one dealing with a needs assessment. The Tribe is writing
a grant to obtain funds for Title IV Part C - Adult Education.
