New WSCAT program focusing on tech, workforce
The Warm Springs Community
Action Team has developed a new
Technology Workforce program,
currently in the process of capacity
building. Sara Dowty is the Com-
munity Action Team Technology
Workforce Analyst.
“The program is currently fo-
cused on researching the technol-
ogy needs, and researching tech-
nology training opportunities,” Ms.
Dowty said. “We’re researching lo-
cal technology companies, and be-
ginning to create the technology
workforce program.” Sara ex-
plains:
The new program will be train-
ing local Warm Springs tribal mem-
bers in the field of technology. The
plan is to create skilled tribal mem-
bers in the field of technology, with
a positive impact in Warm Springs.
“The technology workforce pro-
gram plans to create a long-term
positive change for the local com-
munity,” Sara says.
The program will provide train-
ing opportunities to increase tech-
nology in IT—information technol-
ogy— and computer skills. The pro-
gram will also assist individuals in
job placement, and will be a tech-
nology resource.
The WSCAT Technolog y
Workforce program is planning to
create a solar installation, solar main-
tenance and solar training program.
This may include collaborating
with other businesses in the local
area to purchase equipment, pro-
vide apprenticeships, internships, or
other training opportunities.
Sara Dowty, Community
Action Team Technology
Workforce Analyst.
“Our project will help bridge the
skill gap and create a skilled tribal
workforce to ultimately assist in sus-
taining tribal sovereignty,” Sara says.
WSCAT recently applied for a
small grant to purchase technology,
to be used to create a computer lab
area. “We will be purchasing laptops,
hot spots, headphones, and other
technology equipment that will be
needed for a training program,” she
said.
“The goal is to create a computer
lab area where the Technology
Workforce participants will come
and attend computer classes to
learn,” Sara said.
WSCAT has identified some of
the basic technology and employ-
ment needs in Warm Springs and
will work with low-income individu-
als to build the skills needed to be
successful.

prorgam are seeking tribal mem-
ber input.
The survey will be used to help
develop the local community-
based
needs
Technolog y
Workforce program: “Tribal mem-
ber input is vital to creating a pro-
gram around what the local Warm
Springs residents are interested in
learning,” Dowty said.
Completing the survey and pro-
viding valuable input will be vital
in the creation of the new pro-
gram.
WSCAT’s goal is to provide
tribal members assistance by bridg-
ing any gaps or barriers that may
hinder training opportunities in the
field of technology. The informa-
tion may be used when applying
for future grant opportunities to
obtain funding for future technol-
ogy workforce training opportuni-
ties for tribal members.
“Your participation in the sur-
vey is greatly appreciated,” Ms.
Dowty says.
The survey is open for youth
working age 14 and over. “It will
be particularly interesting to know
what technology the youth are in-
terested in as well,” she says.
The Technology Workforce pro-
gram may focus half of its effort
on working age youth to develop
their computer skills and interests.
There may be winter, spring
and summer computer technology
