A number of the sites are in Oregon, as shown on the map. The investigation turned up over 500 deaths, though that num- ber could climb to the thousands or even tens of thousands. The schools were known to have operated for 150 years, starting in the early 19th century, coinciding with the removal of many tribes from their ancestral lands.
