Winning season for Buffalos
COCC programs for Native
American Heritage Month
November is Native Ameri-
can Heritage Month., and Cen-
tral Oregon Community College
and its Native American Pro-
gram would like to invite you to
a series of free, in-person and
virtual events at COCC.
The events are wide-ranging,
focusing on areas such as the
hardships that Native ancestors
experienced and the generational
trauma; oral traditions, and the
beauty of Native American flute
music. Here are some of the
features events:

Madras wide receiver Byron Patt catches a touchdown pass in
a late October win against Salem Academy, 45-7. The White
Buffaloes had an in-league record of 4-1, overall 6-3. Madras
took second place in 3A-SD1-E Special District 1-East League,
helping them grab a playoff spot.
On Track for careers in health
Oregon Health Sciences Univer-
sity On Track representative Gor-
don Scott is at the Madras High
School Futures Center every
Wednesday to connect with students
on college and career plans.
On Track OHSU! works with
middle and high schools to increase
the number of students from un-
der-represented minority back-
grounds in the health sciences and
in Oregon’s biomedical workforce.
Madras High’s Futures Center
offers students information about
making plans for life after high
school graduation.
November Fitness with Recreation
Warm Springs Recreation and
Community Wellness are hosting
the November Fitness Challenge.
On Monday, November 8 at noon
you can play soccer behind the
community center. The bonus ac-
tivity is a 15 squat challenge.
On Tuesday, November 9 Rec-
reation at noon will host a 1.3 mile
Shitike Shaker Walk. Then Novem-
ber 12 will be the 8-k steps chal-
lenge and 15 sit ups or crunches.
· Legends of the Norther n
Paiute with Wilson Wewa from
the Confederated Tribes of
Warm Springs. Mr. Wewa will
present legends handed down to
him by his elders, in the tradi-
tional story-telling way.
Wilson will be presenting on
the Prineville campus this
Wednesday, November 3 from
5:30–6:30 p.m. A light dinner
will be provided. Mr. Wewa will
also be presenting on the Bend
campus on Wednesday, Novem-
ber 17 from 5:30–6:30 p.m. at
Wille Hall, Coats Campus Cen-
ter.
· Truth, Reckoning and Heal-
ing: A Story of Indian Board-
ing Schools, with Gabriann Hall
from the Klamath Tribes.
Gabriann Hall, professor of
Ethnic Studies and Native
American Studies, will present
on the absolute atrocities that
took place in these institutions,
as well as how and why this hap-
pened to our Native children in
both the U.S. and Canada.
Ms. Hall is an enrolled mem-
ber of the Klamath Tribes.
Gabriann will be presenting on
the Bend campus this Thursday,
November 4, 12 – 1:00 p.m., Wille
Hall, Coats Campus Center.
Feel free to bring your lunch and
join us for this moving presenta-
tion.
Gabriann will also be present-
ing on the Madras campus Mon-
day, November 8 from 11:45–
12:45 p.m. A light lunch will pro-
vided.
