On that date there were 20 active cases among the community, an increase from previous weeks. There were two people hospitalized with the disease, also an increase; and one person passed away. Total breakthrough cases as of August 18 was at 20. Warm Springs IHS testing found two variants: a P1 and a delta. Three tests were pending. Since the pandemic began last spring, and as of August 18 last week, 912 people of the reservation community have tested positive for covid. Page 5 National Guard arrives in Bend as covid cases in the region rise In another sign of the on- going and growing Covid-19 spread in the region, 150 mem- bers of the Oregon National Guard arrived in Bend last week to provide support at St. Charles’ hospitals, from Bend to Madras. The National Guard mem- bers, arriving from all parts of the state, are supporting the health system in non-clinical roles including screening pa- tients and visitors at entrances, running and stocking supplies, preparing and serving food and assisting patients in roles that do not require licensure. Mem- bers of the Guard—which has so far committed to supporting St. Charles through September— will is working throughout the health system, covering both day and night shifts. Tribal board positions IHS updates its Covid-19 testing, positivity data The Indian Health Service has updated its coronavirus data, show- ing results through mid to late Au- gust. Across Indian Country since the pandemic began in March of last year through earlier this month: 214,714 IHS-administered tests have returned positive for Covid- 19. That represents an increase of 0.9 percent from the 212,797 cases previously reported in early August. Altogether since testing became available last year, IHS across In- dian Country has administered 2,684,762 coronavirus tests. The three IHS areas with the highest rate of positive Covid-19 tests remain the Navajo Nation (14.3 percent), the Phoenix area (12.7), and the Oklahoma Area (12). The IHS also tracks the seven- day rolling positive testing average, showing the more recent trends in covid infection. The Portland IHS area was fifth highest in this cat- egory at 7.9 percent testing posi- tivity. The others were: The Oklahoma City Area (19.2 percent), California Area (15.5), Nashville Area (11.8), Phoenix Area (11.7), Navajo Area (7.5), Bemidji Area (6.9), the Alaska Area (6.2), Billings Area (5.4), and the Great Plains Area (5.0).
