Authorities investigate house fire
Warm Springs Police, the FBI
and State Fire Marshal this week
are investigating a weekend house
fire on Foster Street that left two
people hospitalized, one in critical
condition. As of Tuesday the case
was still under investigation.
When Warm Springs Police re-
sponded to the fire, one evening
over the weekend, officers had to
enter the burning building to assist
the residents inside, said Carmen
Smith, Public Safety general man-
ager.
The four people inside and the
officers made it out, though two
were immediately taken to the
hospital, where they were still be-
ing care for this week. Anyone
with information should contact
the Warm Springs Police Depart-
ment, 541-553-1171.
By order of the Twenty-Eighth Tribal
Council of the Confederated Tribes
of Warm Springs, the following pro-
visions apply on the reservation:
All citizens on the reservation are to wear
a face covering mask while in public and in
public places, where social distancing of six
feet or greater cannot be maintained.
Neighborhoods of the reserva-
tion have otherwise been fairly
quiet, Mr. Smith reported this week
to Tribal Council. “This is a good
thing because it means people are
staying home,” he said.
Public Safety continues to moni-
tor its staff, regularly taking tem-
peratures of people on duty, who
are all wearing protective masks
and gloves, Mr. Smith said.
Following a test result of negative or posi-
tive, all citizens of the reservation and em-
ployees working within the boundaries are
to self-isolate and quarantine as directed
by healthcare professionals. Essential em-
ployees and first-responders who have
tested with a negative result will have ad-
ditional guidance about returning to work.

211 Bright Wood layoffs
Bright Wood Corp., where
a number of tribal members
have worked and work, has
laid off more than 200 work-
ers this spring amid a sharp
downturn in customer de-
mand trig gered by the
coronavirus pandemic.
The wood products pro-
ducer notified state employ-
ment officials last week of
layoffs that started in March
and finished in early May.
The cutbacks eliminated
211 employees from factories
in Madras and Redmond that
previously employed 1,000
people.
Bright Wood, based in
Madras, makes wood compo-
nents for windows and doors,
and also has facilicities in
Prineville and New Zealand.
The company indicated it plans
to recall its workers if the
economy recovers.
Oregon has recorded close
to 400,000 jobless claims
since the coronavirus out-
break hit in March.
Hotels, restaurants, bars
and health care provider ser-
vices represented the largest
share of initial cuts, reflect-
ing direct impacts from
Oregon’s stay-home order and
the cutbacks in medical ser-
vices.
