They will speak with legislators about the educational needs of Native students. This year the National Indian Education Associa- tion (NIEA) announces that ‘Hill Day’ attendees will hear directly from four members of Congress: Rep. Kurt Schrader and Rep. Suzanne Bonamici, both of Oregon; and the first two Native women elected to the U.S. Congress: Rep. Sharice Davids of Kansas, and Rep. Deb Haaland of New Mexico. “NIEA is honored by the tremendous support demon- strated by Congressional members Schrader, Haaland, Bonamici and Davids. NIEA appreciates their commitment to ad- dress critical education needs for underserved com- munities,” said Diana Cournoyer, NIEA executive director. NIEA, was just awarded $25,000 from the nonprofit educational assessment and research organization, ETS. The funding will support ad- vocacy training on key issues related to Native education, culture and language. Based in Washington DC, ‘Hill Day,’ is an immersive legislative experience that creates dialogue and honest testimony regarding the sta- tus of Native education. NIEA and partner organi- zations will share impactful narratives with federal lead- ership. Sessions provide at- tendees with valuable tools for effective advocacy dur- ing meetings with legislators prearranged and guided by NIEA legislative staff. Opportunities for net- working have expanded to include an exclusive recep- tion co-hosted by NIEA and the American Indian Higher Education Consortium.
