Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon April 24, 2019 Students at the Warm Springs Academy held a drum concert in the school gymnasium. Hundreds of people showed up for the concert. The students had spent a lot of time preparing, practicing the songs, which featured the hand- and other drums, ukuleles, singing and dancing. The Jefferson County School District 509-J has two positions opening on its board of directors. The open seats are 509-J position No. 4 and No. 5. The election will be on May 21, in a vote-by-mail special election. There is time to regis- ter to vote in the election, or to update your voter registration. The deadline is April 30. If you register online, at oregonvotes.org, you would have until 11:59 p.m. on April 30 to regis- ter. County jail Jefferson County is also proposing a 3-year jail operating levy on the May ballot. An earlier 5-year levy proposal failed at the polls. The county reduced the proposal to the three years, and is re-submitting the question on the May 21 ballot. The ballot ques- tion reads: Shall a tax of $1.39 per $1,000 assessed value be levied for jail operations commencing FY 2019- 2020 for three years? Passage of this mea- sure would cause property taxes to increase more than three percent. Res- ervation and trust prop- erty of the Confederated Tribes is not taxes, so this aspect of the measure would not apply to the tribes.
