Roadmap for condor return to Northwest The California condor— known also as the Thunderbird—is a tradi- tional legendary and mytho- logical bird of Native American communities, es- pecially the Wasco. The condor was the bird of storms, arriving inland from the ocean. The image of the thunderbird—with its giant wingspan—is featured on pieces of tribal artwork. An example is a cradle board with beadwork at the Mu- seum at Warm Springs. Condors were common in the Pacific Northwest, in- cluding along the Columbia River, until the last century. Pesticides were a main cause of the birds’ disappearance. In 1985 the condor had spiraled down to the brink of extinction, with only 22 birds remaining. These remaining birds were taken into captivity in a last ditch effort to save the species. That effort paid off. Today, thanks to three de- cades of dedicated work by a range of partners, 290 condors now fly free in the wild, all in the Desert South- west and northern Baja Pen- insula. Now, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the Yurok Tribe of Northern California and National Park Service are taking the next big step in the condor’s re- covery with a proposal to re- introduce America’s largest land bird to parts of the Pa- cific Northwest. 2018 KIA Soul - 7,667 miles - 2018 Mazda - 9,160 miles - $15,995 $21,995 #P6058B #08424A 2019 Chevy Malibu - - $19,035 #152703 2017 Toyota Tundra - 35,743 miles - $37,995 2017 Subaru Outback - 31,801 miles - $30,995 #55187W 2016 Chevy Colorado - 56,855 miles - $27,995 #03220A #31416A 2016 GMC Canyon - 36,000 miles - 2016 Buick Encore - 11,821 miles - $31,995 $18,995 #15555A #99509A 2015 Chevy Camaro - 27,578 miles - $24,995 #08263C 2008 Jeep Wrangler - 114,784 miles - $18,995 #00752C 2006 - Nissan X Terra - 54,500 miles - 2005 Malibu Max - 150,790 miles - $9,995 $5,495 #93569A #30133A
