ICWA case may go to Supreme Court
A federal judge in Texas
has struck down the Indian
Child Welfare Act, a decades-
old federal law aimed at keep-
ing Native American families
together.
Backed by the state of
Texas, Chad and Jennifer
Brackeen—a non-Native
American couple with two
biological children—sued last
October for the right to
adopt a Native American tod-
dler they had fostered for
more than a year. A state

Walk. The Walk will be at the
Warm Springs Community
Center from noon to 1 p.m.
this Friday, October 12.
Awards include gift cer-
tificates in the amounts of
$100, $75, $50 and $25.
As part of the fundraiser,
there will be Krispy Kreme
Doughnuts for sale, $12 per
dozen. The afternoon will in-
clude light snacks, Spin the
Prize Wheel, a balloon release
and health screening (in the
Community Center social
hall).

p.m. Slot tournaments Oc-
tober 11 and 25 at 6 p.m.
court had denied their adop-
tion petition; the federal law
gives adoption placement
preference to biological fam-
ily members of Native
American children, other
members of the child’s tribe,
or other Native American
families.
Texas Attorney General
Ken Paxton sided with the
Brackeens, arguing that the
law unlawfully “elevates a
child’s race over their best
interest.”
The case may end up at
the U.S. Supreme Court
