Kindergarten families should have received letters for confer- ences with teachers, coming up this Friday, August 17 and Mon- day August 20. If you haven’t received a let- ter, your child might not be regis- tered for school. The office opens this Wednes- day August 15. You can reach them at 541-553-1128. If needed, you can come in to register and pick up your kindergarten conference letter. If you are wondering about the long school supply list (below), know that many supplies will be provided to Warm Springs Acad- emy classrooms again this year. Families may want to wait to do back to school supply shopping until after the first week of school, to find out what items are still needed from your teacher or teachers. If you do shop, you can’t go wrong with a backpack, pencils, pens and paper. And remember— It’s great to have some supplies at home as well as in the classroom. First- through eighth-grade stu- dents start back at the Warm Springs Academy on Monday Au- gust, 20. It’s a late start Monday so school starts at 9:45 a.m. Rise & Shine kids can come at 8 a.m. Kindergarten students start at the Warm Springs Academy on Tuesday, August 21. On regular school days kids should arrive at school by 8:05 a.m., pick up breakfast and go to class- rooms for an 8:15 a.m. start time. Breakfast closes at 8:25. From Monday, August 27 through Friday, August 31 there is no school for a teacher in-service week. The Back to School Barbecue and Family Information Fair is Thursday, August 30 at the Acad- emy. This is an opportunity for school staff, students, families and the community to share some time together. The meal is free. The Family Information Fair will be in the cafeteria and gym. If you visit all the booths, you will be en- tered into a raffle drawing. It’s a great opportunity to learn about community resources, offer feed- back., learn new things, make new connections, and have some fun. This is for fami- lies to learn more about their kin- dergarten student’s transition to the Warm Springs Academy. Another session will be on August 30. · Classes at the Warm Springs Academy are back in session Monday August 20-24. The week of August 27 will be teacher in-service training district wide, and there is no school for students. · The Warm Springs Back to School barbecue is Thursday, August 30 from 4-6 p.m. at the Academy. · Labor Day is Monday, Sep- tember 3, then it’s back to school for most students on Tuesday, Sep- tember 4. Seventh and eighth grades at the middle school, and upper classmen at Madras High School start back on Wednesday, September 5. Schools, community liaison with OHSU The Oregon Health Sci- ences University Office of Science Education Oppor- tunities team is seeking an On Track Warm Springs Community Liaison. The liaison will be based here in Warm Springs, and will be responsible for cre- ating a direct connection be- tween OHSU and the local community. The person will work with Warm Springs middle and high school students, as well as recent high school gradu- ates and post-secondary stu- dents. This work will help OHSU On Track! better reach its goal to increase stu- dent interest in, awareness of, and preparation for health and science degrees and careers. The community liaison will also create new connec- tions with families and Warm Springs resources and events, to better engage families and the community in the On Track! program. The liaison will be respon- sible for helping to adapt program materials and les- sons with a culturally re- sponsive lens to best fit the needs of the students from the Warm Springs commu- nity. Here are requirements for the job: · Four years of general office or secretarial experi- ence; Or an Associate’s de- gree or certificate in office occupations or office tech- nology and two years of general office or secretarial experience; Or a Bachelor’s degree and two years of gen- eral office or secretarial ex- perience; Or an equivalent combination of training and experience. · Minimum two years’ experience working with tribal communities. · Demonstrated experi- ence creating culturally re- sponsive activities and events. · Demonstrated experi- ence working with Native American educational re- sources. · Skills and ability to men- tor and advise students in high school or college. · Demonstrated knowl- edge, skills and ability with planning events. · Comfortable collabo- rating and communicating with multiple community and OHSU partners includ- ing families, tribal, school dis- trict, and professional enti- ties. · Knowledge of college and scholarship application requirements and strategies.
