Vets housing, trailer court update at Council
The Warm Springs Hous-
ing Authority is planning a
clean-up of the Trailer Court
neighborhood, including re-
moval of some vacant and
non-habitable units.
It’s been many years since
the Trailer Court neighbor-
hood has seen any remedial
attention, said Danielle
Wood, Housing Authority
executive director.
There are seven units that
are not habitable, and will be
removed, Ms. Wood said,
reporting this week at Tribal
Council.
Addressing conditions at
the Trailer Court—such as
abandoned units where
people may nevertheless be
living—would also help re-
duce crime in that neighbor-
hood, said Housing Author-
ity chairwoman Evaline Patt.
Veterans housing
Ms. Wood also reported on
the Housing Authority veter-
ans program, called the Vet-
erans Affairs Supportive
Housing, or VASH program.
Housing has funding to
help up to 20 tribal member
veterans who may be home-
less.
Five veterans are cur-
rently using the program,
and another five are in the
qualifying process, Ms.
Wood said.
A veteran can use the
voucher for a residence on
the reservation or off. The
term ‘homeless’ is important
in regard to VASH: The pro-
gram is not limited only to
veterans living literally with-
out a home.
For instance, a veteran liv-
ing with family members
would qualify—the standard
instead being whether the
veteran has his or her own
residence.
A requirement is working
with the Veterans Administra-
tion, who will deter mine
whether the person qualifies.
Any veteran interested in
this program, start at Hous-
ing where they will refer to
their contact person at the
VA.

De-contamination
At Housing nine employ-
ees recently completed meth-
amphetamine decontamina-
tion training, and four more
are planning to take the train-
ing. Four units were recently
decontaminated.
Meth contamination is a
costly problem for Housing,
removing units from the al-
ready limited supply. The
cleaning process costs thou-
sands of dollars.
