Team working to reestablish Education Branch
Education is among the
top priorities of the Twenty-
Seventh Tribal Council. The
Proclamation of this Coun-
cil says in part:
“The Tribal Council shall
develop, review and approve
a plan to restructure and
build the tribes’ education
program in order to meet
the educational goals and
needs of its members, in-
cluding traditional, non-tra-
ditional students and those
wishing to pursue vocational
opportunities.”
Toward this g oal the
Tribal Council has directed
to reestablishment of the
Education Branch.
For the past few years,
departments of the future
Education Branch have been
part of the Health and Hu-
man Services branch. So
management and Health and
Human Services have been
working on how to separate
these components into the
new branch.
The departments in ques-
tion include Culture and
Heritage, Workforce Devel-
opment and High Education,
OSU Extension, and Native
Aspirations, the summer
youth work program. Four-
teen current positions—in
addition to the many students
who take part in the summer
Native Aspirations pro-
gram—will become part of

the Education Department
in 2018.
The plan by management
and Health and Human Ser-
vices has been a three-year
transition, starting with a
establishing an education
department in 2018 under
the Chief Operations Of-
ficer.
Then in 2019 this de-
partment would become the
independent Education
Branch. Some of the tran-
sition is occurring in 2017.
Funding of the new
branch is the challenge, a
matter currently pending
with Tribal Council and man-
agement.
At a recent meeting,
Tribal Councilman Jody
Calica suggested that the
three-year process seems to
be long for the project.
Chief Operations Officer
Alyssa Macy said the ap-
proach has been one of en-
suring success of the new
branch, with the funding as-
pect at the forefront.
The details of the transi-
tion plan are under discus-
sion, as Council develops the
2018 tribal budget.
Details will be presented
to the membership at the up-
coming district and General
Council 2018 budget meet-
ings. These meetings will be
in October.
