Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon Student nominated for leadership in science Jalaney Suppah was nominated as a delegate to the Congress of Future Science and Technology Leaders in Lowell, Mass in June. The Congress is an honors-only program for high school students who are passionate about science, technology, engineering or math- ematics. Jaleney is a sophomore at Madras High School. The purpose of the Congress is to honor, inspire, motivate and direct the top students in the coun- try who aspire to be scientists and technologists, to stay true to their dream and, after the event, to pro- vide a path, plan and resources to help them reach their goal. Jalaney Suppah was nominated to represent Oregon by Dr. John C. Mather, winner of the Nobel Prize in Physics and Science Di- rector of the National Academy of Future Scientists and Technolo- gists. The nomination was based on Jalaney’s academic achievement, leadership potential and passion for science and technology. “This is a crucial time in America when we need more nimble- minded and creative scientists and technologists who are even better prepared for a future that is chang- ing exponentially,” said Richard Rossi, executive director, National Academy of Future Scientists and Technologists. “Focused, bright and deter- mined students like Jalaney Suppah are our future and she deserves all the mentoring and guidance we can give her.” The Academy offers free ser- vices and programs to students who have the desire to learn more about their future in science or technol- ogy. The Academy was founded on the belief that science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) education play a critical role in enabling the U.S. to remain the economic and technological leader of the global marketplace. May 24, 2017 Page 5 Honored with science, technology award My name is Jalaney Lily Ann Suppah. I am currently a sophomore attending Madras High School and an enrolled tribal member of the Confed- erated Tribes of Warm Springs. This summer I will be trav- elling to Boston, Massachusetts for a once in a lifetime experi- ence with some of the greatest minds in science and technol- ogy. I have been nominated as a delegate for the National Acad- emy of Future Scientist and Technologist Award of Excel- lence. I feel honored to be se- lected for my academic achievements, leadership poten- tial and determination to serve humanity in the field of science and technology. I will get the chance to dis- cuss and observe state-of-the- art inventions and make long- term friendships. My learning experiences will undoubtedly change my per- spectives and enhance my edu- cational knowledge. I am most looking forward to meeting dis- tinguished world leaders, such as Nobel Prize winners in Phys- ics, Technology, Science, Inno- vation, award-winning young inventors, deans of top univer- sities and many other high school students. I am grateful for this inspir- Jalaney Suppah ing opportunity to be around many diverse leaders of many ages who truly make a difference by devot- ing their futures to changing the world through science and tech- nology. I have had the opportunity to participate in the National Junior Honors Society as a sixth, seventh and eighth grader. I strive to stay on the Honor Roll, and be a good role model to the younger students. It takes a great deal of work to maintain academic excellence and participate in sports. I am a student/athlete of Ma- dras High School, and enjoy play- ing in high school sports year- round. I played soccer, basketball and softball for Madras High School this year. I also stay involved during summer and attend many camps and enjoy sup- porting our school programs and community by actively fundraising for our sports pro- grams. Academic and athletic suc- cess takes a team to succeed. I would like to thank all my teachers, coaches, family, school counselors, 509-J school board, Madras and War m Springs communities, and my parents for their support and encouragement to be a student athlete.
