Meter project to help address water situation
Possibly the biggest infra-
structure need facing the
Confederated Tribes is the
tribal water system.
The treatment plant at the
Deschutes River is 32 years
old, and in time will need sig-
nificant improvements, or
maybe even replaced.
This could be a $25 mil-
lion project, said Roy Spino,
tribal water and wastewater
engineer. He reported re-
cently to Tribal Council on
the water plant, and the tribal
water system in general.
There is reason to believe
the BIA would be responsible
for the cost of the water sys-
tem improvement, Spino said.
But like with other projects,
in order to get the job done
the responsibility could very
well land with the tribes.
Meanwhile there is a plan
that could extend the life of
Submit artwork by Friday
The Creativity Explored
Community Art Exhibit is
coming up this month at the
Museum at Warm Springs.
Art can be submitted to
the museum through this
Friday, April 14 at 5 p.m.
Guidelines are available at
the museum.
The exhibit will showcase
artists work or reside on the
reservation, or are married
into the tribes. This exhibit
will give local artists a sense
of belonging to the local art
community. Some art will be
for sale, said Natalie Kirk,
museum curator.

Show, which is coming up this
summer. The community ex-

the treatment plant. This is
the water meter project.
An assessment of the wa-
ter system is now done, com-
pleted through a USDA grant.
The results are with the
USDA, which could provide
a grant to install the water
meters, said tribal planner
Lonny Macy. Cost may be $2
million.
Here is the problem: The
average per capita domestic
water use on the reservation
is 40,000 gallons a month.
This compares with the state
average of 5,000 gallons per
month.
This is not to say that

Caldera of Madras are
pleased to announce the birth
of their son Karsen John
Boise, born on March 27,
tribal residences use eight
times more water than the
average.
Instead, the figures dem-
onstrate the system has sig-
nificant leakage.
By installing water meters
at all residences on the sys-
tem, the Utilities Department
could isolate where the prob-
lem leak areas are located, and
then fix them.
Currently, only about 15
percent of residences on the
system in the Warm Springs
area have meters.
The goal of this project is
to install meters at all resi-
dences and businesses.
