Development projects coming up in 2017
There are a variety of
planning, development and
safety items on the 2017
schedule for the reserva-
tion.
The Planning Depart-
ment is looking to get the
water meter study com-
plete, and then apply for
funding for water meter
installations. The meters
would mostly be in the
War m Springs area, as
other areas already have
meters.
The water meter pro-
gram is intended to reduce
the amount of drinking
water that is lost to leak-
age in the system, said
Lonny Macy, tribal planner.
Currently, there is no
way to determine where
major leaks might be hap-
pening.
Meanwhile, the tribes
and BIA are planning to
move forward with demoli-
tion of old and un-used build-
ings in the campus area.
At the same time, Christ
Watson and the War m
Springs Community Action
Team are pursuing a plan to
move the old commissary
building, and develop a busi-
ness site.
The building might be
moved to the corner of area
of Highway 26 and Paiute
Street. This would allow small
businesses to attract traffic
off the highway.
The old commissary is a
historic structure, located be-
hind the post office.
Based on meetings with
the public, the idea at the
Community Action Team is
to have retail space in the
downstairs of the building,
and business office space
above.
Safety corridor
Another project coming
up is the Safety Corridor Plan
implementation.
The state of Oregon has
made funding available for
this work, focusing on vari-
ous areas around War m
Springs, from the school, to
the museum and casino cross-
ing, to Highway 26 as it passes
through town.
The highway from the bot-
tom of the grade to the area
by Rainbow Market has
safety issues that could be
addressed through this
project.
The crossing at Highway
26 and Hollywood Boule-
vard, and the lack of pedes-
trian space along the highway
to the museum and casino,
are examples.
Planning is expecting to
bring a final plan to Tribal
Council during the early part
of this year.

General Council meeting
on supplemental budget
Tribal Council set a
General Council meeting
for January 12, regarding
a supplemental budget
proposal.
The has given prelimi-
nary approval of a loan
that would Kah-Nee-Ta
resort to stay in operation
through the winter. The
process involves a supple-
mental budget, requiring
the General Council meet-
ing, set for the Agency
Longhouse.
The plan is to transfer
$400,000 from the gas tax
refund to the Business
Investment Revolving
Fund (BIRF).
The loan to Kah-Nee-
Ta can then be made
from this fund.
The gas tax refund is
specifically intended, by
earlier Council resolution,
for economic develop-
ment projects.
Kah-Nee-Ta went to
winter hours, Friday
through Sunday, late
this fall and early win-
ter, as a means of cost
savings. T he resor t
management
and
board implemented
other cost-saving mea-
sures, such as closing
the golf course, and the
Kah-Nee-Ta office in
Portland.
Kah-Nee-Ta has not
made a profit in many
years, but management
and the board are look-
ing at ways to correct
the situation.
Bringing in an outside
partner, for instance,
could be part of the so-
lution.
