Always a good time for learning
Jesse Gilbert graduated
from Sherman Indian High
School in Riverside in 1997.
During his time there, he was
able to visit all kinds of col-
leges.
And now he is a student at
Central Oregon Community
College, working toward a
Master Automotive Technol-
ogy Degree.
Jesse hopes eventually to
own his own business. And he
figures with a degree he has
more options than people
who have no degree.
There were a few ob-
stacles in going to college, but
he didn’t let that stop him.
One of the more frustrat-
ing obstances was the finan-
cial aid process with the tribes.
When he first graduated
from high school, he had
three acceptance letters from
three different colleges. But
because he did not attend

eligible for help from Warm
Springs.
His advice: Find out how
the Confederated Tribes
higher ed works. Jesse says he
did not get much information
when he was in high school,
and wishes he had known
more, but now he has the pro-
cess figured out:
“My grandfather Pierson
Mitchell told me to make col-
lege a priority, and do it while
I was still young. Unfortu-
nately, my lifestyle was lead-
ing me into bad choices, so I
didn’t do it while I was young.
“But my grandmother also
inspired me, since she got her
GED at the age of 60. So it’s
never too late to go get an
education.”
His advice to people think-
ing about going back to col-
lege? “Ask for help. There are
many people who want to
help you—You just have to
ask. And stick with your plan.
If you decide you want an-
other degree, finish the one
you’re on. You can always go
back to school.”
