The old volcano—the ge-
ologists refer to it is Mount
Mutton—might have looked
something like Mt. Jefferson
before millions of years of
erosion created the forma-
tions we see today.
It is the legacy of the old
volcano that is providing the
geothermal conditions, part
of which is familiar to resi-
dents as the Kah-Nee-Ta hot
springs.
An earlier study indicated
that the geothermal condi-
tions may be the result of
activity from Mt. Jefferson,
but this seems unlikely, said
Dr. Kuscu. The more likely
explanation, he said, is the old
Mount Mutton.
