Dave McMechan photos Josh and Mary Olney with the pigs they raised for the county fair. M any young people from Warm Springs entered live- stock—beef, swine and goats—in the Jefferson County Fair. Hunter Onstad entered in the beef category, with a 1,024-pound steer called Juju. Jeremiah, Gabi and Shawntana Smith raised Boer goats, earning fair awards for their work. Hayden and Dylan Heath also raised goats for the fair. They are with the Lyle Gap 4-H. All the youth are with the Lyle Gap 4-H Club. Mary and Josh Olney raised pigs on. They’ve been with the 4-H Club for three years. They learned how to inspect the animals, give them vaccines, and keep them healthy and cool in the hot weather. Mary is going into the tenth grade next year. She plans to join the FFA, and wants to raise a sheep next year. Josh is going into the eighth grade in the fall. Birth announcements A salmon bake and Native art sale fundraiser in support of the proposed Columbia River Fishers Memorial will be on Saturday, August 6 from 3-8 p.m. at the Helvetia Winery in Hillsboro. Dinner is at 5 p.m., drum- ming and dancing at 6:30. The art exhibit and sale will be open to the public on Sun- day, August 7 from noon to 5 p.m. The salmon dinner, dancing and drumming will be presented by the Wilbur Slockish family, and art is cre- ated by internationally re- nowned American Indian art- ists. The Ninth Annual Our Community event is com- ing up on Saturday, August 6 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Sahalee Park in Madras. The event has many free ser vices for community members including dental care, medical screenings, clothing, family photos, auto/ bicycle service, hair cuts and more. There will be activi- ties for kids, live music and food.
