TERO, members attend Women in Trades career fair
Tribal employment work-
ers attended the recent
Women in the Trades Career
Fair, held in Portland.
From the tribes were
tribal Employment Rights
Office (TERO) dispatcher
Mary Sando-Emhoolah, and
TERO commissioners
Jonathan Smith and Marge
Kalama. Smith is also with
the Warm Springs Ross pro-
gram.
Melinda Poitra, Workforce
Innovation and Opportunity
Act (WIOA), and four youth
took part, with tribal mem-
ber Devontre Thomas, Power
and Water’s Wilfred Sando,
and TERO worker Ramone
Thomas.
The exhibitors at the
Women in the Trades Career
Fair were the BPA, the city
of Portland, IBEW, Les
Schwab, Mt. Hood Commu-
nity College, the Northwest
College of Construction,
ODOT, PacificCorp, PCC
trades and industry, to name
a few. In all there were 70
employment exhibitors.
The career fair featured
the various labor trades,
plumbing, welding, electrical,
construction and operator
trades. Participants met with
presenters and experienced
first-hand how to do some of
the trades.
Ramone Thomas spoke to
the tribal group at lunch about
his experience working on the
Ross Island Bridge. This was
through the Grand Ronde
TERO program, he said.
Thomas currently works in
Portland.
The Warm Springs con-
tingent attended to experi-
ence the career, and to
gather information to host
a Native Women in the
Trades Career Fair here in
Warm Springs, said Sando-
Emhoolah.
The idea would be invite
the Columbia River and other
tribes, and their TERO rep-
resentatives.
