As a rule, tnainline bati'Rs'
don’t finance start-ups. They
usually w ant a minimum o f
two years profitable business$
experience. Properly p re
pared financial statements will
help make your case to a
lender.
Lenders for start-ups are
fewer. Savings, friends and
family come to mind and to
the table. . .
Micro business lending is
a specialty. Financing may
come with training and super
vision requirements.
Ask around.
Attorneys
You want a pro. Pick one
that has been around a long
time. You will be hiring their
abilities and'their experience.
T hat experience is im por
ta n t and can help you to
avoid ‘structural’ errors when
setting up the business, and
later when legal issues arise.
T hat happens.
Remember the Boy Scout
M arch in g Song, ‘Be P re

Investment advisors
Successful businesses have
profits. T h a t’s one way o f
measuring success.
W hat they do with those
profits is important.
Some o f those profits may
stay in the business. We call
th e m ‘re ta in e d earn in g s?
They may be cash or other
assets such as inventory and
equipment. They might be
come a building.

T hat’s a good thing for the
company and for the employ
ees.
Some profits are distrib
uted to owners as dividends,
and to employees as bonuses.
T h at’s another good'thing.
They might even be loaned
back tb .the business at a later
In th a t case, th e cash
would become an asset o f the
business and also a liability on
the books, Cue the b o o k
keeper and the accountant.
Best advice would be to
use an investment advisor if
and when you decide to in
vest in anything you are not
really savvy about. Select
yo u rs carefully and count
their fee as part o f your in-
vestment.in success.
Your other Business Suc
cess Team members may be
able to help with the selec
tion o f that advisor.
Mentors
They come in all shapes
and sizes. Some mentorships
are formal and some infor
mal.
Formal plight have ‘rules’
and “req u irem en ts” as to
when, how often, where and
for how long you will meet.
Homework may be assigned.
Inform al can be a whole
lot less structured and yet it
is often enough. It can be
accidental. O ften is.
Some mentors don’t even
k now th ey are m e n to rs.
T hose are the ones w hose

They will often teach you. It’s
a sharing thing. Select them
carefully.
Think o f them as ‘family.’
They' will be your business
family.
Take joy in their growth
and make provision for them
to enjoy yours. Your rewards
will be in different and w on
derful ways.
G ood grief! T hat’s a lot
o f people and a bunch o f
different skill sets. They are
usually needed, and som e
times too often not heeded.
W ho might not need that
kind o f help?
O ne example could be the
retired executive w ho gets
restless and goes into business
again. I’m thinking o f some
one who worked his or.her
way up from the bottom to
the top o f their business lad
der.
They have the experience,
the tools and the money to
set up and simplify their op
eration so as to m ake it a
paragon o f efficiency and
profit. I have seen it done in
a one-man shop.
But they are the exception
rather than the rule. The rest
o f us usually don’t have all
those resources. We are in the
building/learning stage.
T hat’s okay. T hat’s what
our Business Success Team
is for----to help: us get to the
top of our own business lad
der.
So what’s the message?
H ow about, “Build your
Business Success Team be
fore you open your business,
and your business just might
be a success.”
