The Archives collection is extraordinary. They have a Wasco wedding veil from the 1850s, adorned with Chinese coins dating from sometime between 1664 and 1774. The collection includes hundreds of pages of 19 th century written documents of Kiksht translations. Else- where: July Members of the War m Springs Youth Council traveled to the first-ever White House Tribal Youth Gathering, held in Washing- ton, D.C. “This trip was a once in a lifetime experience,” Keeyana Yellowman, Youth Council member, reported upon their return. “And the Warm Springs Youth Coun- cil members who partici- pated were very blessed to have been apart of it. Else- where: The Warm Springs For- est Products Industries management and board have come up with a plan that should keep the mill operat- ing for at least the next couple of years. Part of the plan involved a downsizing. The mill had to cut about 20 jobs, and now employs 86 people. Sev- enty-seven percent of the employees are tribal mem- bers or married in to the tribe. August The Warm Springs Head Start program began in the summer of 1965, and this month is marking its Fifty Year Anniversary. Head Start will host a celebration at the end of the month to mark the occasion. Elsewhere: Close to 600 fire fighters are on the reservation in re- sponse to the Countyline 2 fire. The fire burned across 60,000 acres, and destroyed four resi-dential buildings. Two of the homes were not being occupied. There were no reported injuries. During fire evacuations, several families were living at the Red Cross and Health and Human Services shelter, set up at the community cen- ter. In other August news: The Roots program re- ceived some good news: The Spirit Mountain Community Fund awarded Roots a grant in the amount of $147,696. In other August education news on the reservation: Some important changes are coming up this school year at the Warm Springs k-8 Eagle Academy. There are new bus routes, new school hours, and new staff at the academy, entering its second year. And this: The Nestlé company and the city of Cascade Locks have been planning the com- mercial use and sale of Ox- bow Springs water. The Confederated Tribes of Warm Springs are against the idea as proposed. The proposal is seen as another threat to tribal water, fisher- ies and other treaty rights. The treaty rights date back at least to 1855, earlier than any other. Nestlé is proposing to build a water bottling plant at Cascade Locks. The idea would involve the removal of about 118 million gallons of water per year from the pris- tine Oxbow Springs, the wa- ter source for the Oxbow Fish Hatchery. September Glendon Smith joined tribal management full-time as secr etar y-tr easur er. Smith served seven years as an associate judge on the Warm Springs Tribal Court. Glendon has a Bachelor’s Degree from Oregon State University, and a Master’s Degree in justice administra- tion from the University of Phoenix. Also in September: The Madras-Jefferson County Chamber of Com- merce named Warm Springs language teacher S u z i e Slockish the Senior Citi- zen of the Year at their awards banquet, held at the Erickson Aircraft Collection museum. Suzie has been a language teacher at Culture and Heritage for more than 20 years. And this from Cul- ture and Heritage: In September a team from Warm Springs Culture and Heritage visited the Smithsonian Archives in The Confederated Tribes received word of a grant award of more than $830,000, to be used for Public Safety and the Vic- tims of Crime Services. The Warm Springs Police De- partment will use some of the funding to buy new police cars. Warm Springs Power and Water Enterprises is begin- ning the second phase of a geother mal research project. Power and Water, and the Confederated Tribes learned last week they have received a grant in the amount of $580,000 to pursue the re- search. Warm Springs Ventures met with community mem- bers to discuss the economic aspect of the legalization of cannabis in Oregon. The goal of Ventures is to create jobs and generate rev- enue for the tribes. Cannabis can now be seen as a poten- tial economic development opportunity, Sampson said. Ventures’ initial research into this area, as approved by Tribal Council, shows an op- portunity for significant rev- enue—more than $13 million net the first year—plus good- paying jobs in the greenhouse or greenhouses. Saddle. In other rodeo news: Jenna Johnson is the high- est qualifier in Ladies Breakaway Roping at this year’s Indian National Fi- nals Rodeo. She and eight other folks from War m Springs will be competing at the 2015 Indian National Fi- nals Rodeo, coming up in November. In other news: The U.S. Department of Agriculture produced a video featuring the Warm Springs k-8 Academy and the com- munity of Warm Springs. USDA representatives were in Warm Springs, meet- ing with Tribal Council, ask- ing permission to release the video online. November Walter ‘Spud’ Langnese retired from the Tr i b a l Court, after 18 years on the bench. For the past two years he has been the Chief Judge. Elsewhere: Tribal Council set Decem- ber 17 for a referendum on the cannabis project. In other November news: Tribal Council last week appointed two new judges to the Tribal Court of the Confederated Tribes. The new Chief Judge is Lorintha Umtuch, and the new Asso- ciate Judge is Maria Godines. They join Judge Lisa Lomas on the court. And this: A proposal to amend the Tribal Constitution, re- garding the Tribal Council and elections, may have enough signatures to require a tribal referendum, to be con- ducted by the BIA. This month the group that gathered the signatures sub- mitted the petition and signa- ture sheets to the War m Springs Agency BIA Super- intendent. The proposed changes are significant in re- gard to the Tribal Council of the Confederated Tribes. Voting would be at large, rather than by district, and there would be no life-time positions on the Council, for instance. Meanwhile: The Confederated Tribes hosted the Honoring Veter- ans Powwow at the Agency Longhouse. The powwow was during the mid November weekend following the Veter- ans Day Parade.
