The Confederated Tribes
of Grand Ronde are oppos-
ing a Cowlitz casino proposal
in Washington.
The Grand Ronde Tribes
meanwhile have purchased a
former racetrack property in
the Portland area, and the
plan for this property has not
yet been made clear.
Grand Ronde operates the
Spirit Mountain Casino. The
facility draws patrons from
the Portland area, about 60
miles away.
The Cowlitz Tribe would
compete for the same pa-
trons with a casino just across
the border in Washington. The
152-acre site is about 30 miles
from Portland.
The Grand Ronde Tribes
sued the BIA to block the
Cowlitz Tribe’s land-into-trust
application. A decision hasn’t
been made in the case.
And with no ruling in sight,
government attorneys filed a
notice in court this month
that said the BIA will place
the 152-acre site in trust. The
Grand Ronde are calling the
decision premature.
Meanwhile, the Grand
Ronde have purchased the
31-acre Multnomah Grey-
hound Park in Wood Village
for an undisclosed price.
Despite the Grand Ronde
tribe finalizing its purchase of
the former Multnomah Grey-
hound Park in Wood Village,
plans for the site remain un-
clear.
