Head Start turns 50 years
Warm Springs Head
Start staff and parents
met at the community
center on Monday, for
a day of team building
and training.
Warm Springs Head
Start as old as the
national Head Start
program itself: Warm
Springs was a charter
member, beginning in
1965 when the na-
tional program
launched.
Mitch Factor was a
guest speaker. Thirty-
six people work at
Warm Springs Head
Start-Early Head Start.

Prevention bringing Sacred Hoop to community

The Hoop was built in
a sweat lodge in May of
1995. A multi-cultural El-
ders gathering was held in
Janesville, Wisc., to pro-
vide prayers for the Hoop,
and align its purpose to the
coming healing time. The El-
ders placed the four gifts of
Healing, Hope, Unity and
Power to Forgive the Unfor-
givable into the Hoop.
The Mission of the Sacred
Hoop: Healing individuals,
families, communities and
nations. When the Sacred
Hoop comes to a community,
the people gather for ceremo-
nies and talks about living a
sober and healthy life that is
balanced emotionally,
mentally, physically and
spiritually.

From Higher Education
The tribes’ Higher Educa-
tion program assist tribal
member students, who have
their high school diploma or
GED, prepare for college.
Students can apply at
Higher Education, and sub-
mit their tribal scholarship
applications.
Students must apply for
FAFSA (Federal Application
for Federal Student Assis-
tance). Workshops are held at
the Central Oregon Commu-
nity College campuses.
These workshops help stu-
dent or parents who need as-
sistance in completing the
FAFSA process.
Meanwhile, COCC is hav-
ing the 2015 Fall Bobcat ori-
entation for registered new,
first-time, returning and trans-
ferring students. The orienta-
tion will be on Friday, Sep-
tember 25, all day at all cam-
puses.

Lunch will be provided,
and there will be drawings for
prizes, and vital student suc-

provides a wide verity of edu-
cational assistance—scholar-
ship assistance, registration,
advising, workshops, reten-
tion, etc.

not only to Confederated
Tribes, but all Native Ameri-
can students attending
COCC. Thank you Gina for
all your assistance and hard
work.
Note: Due to the limited
number of GED teachers,
there is a possibility of Warm
Springs GED classes are go-
ing to be held at Madras
COCC campus for this 2015
Fall Quarter.
