project to preserve historic sound
recording in its archives w th as
sistance from Nathan Georgitis o f
the University o f Oregon, funded
by a grant from the Oregon Heri
tage Commission, and under the
direction o f Culture & Heritage
Director, Valerie Switzler. Media
Specialist Dana Smith digitized ap
proximately 20 0 analog cassettes
containing oral histories, stories,
legends, songs and ceremonies.
Smith com pleted the work on a
pair o f audio preservation w ork
stations purchased through the
grant th a t will be used to continue
w ork on the Culture & Heritage
Departments audio archives.

strong potential fo r use by tribal
m em bers and organiza tins fo r
personal enrichm ent, teaching
and learning, and cultu ral p ro
gramming. The Culture & Heri
tage Department intends to make
these recordings available on a
web portal In the near future. In
a n o th e r g ra n t funded p ro je c t,
Culture & Heritage Departments
hired elders and traditional bear
ers to transcribe and translate
s e le c te d re c o rd in g s in th e
Sahaptin, Kiksht, and Numu lan
guages. A local partner and ben
eficiary o f this project includes
Governm ental A ffa irs w ho has
used oral histories o f Tribal mem
be rs d o c u m e n tin g tra d itio n a l
ways on the Columbia River to ad
vocate fo r tribal rights to natural
resources.
The project is the latest e ffo rt in
collaboration between the Univer
sity o f Oregon Libraries and the
Culture & Heritage Departm ent
th a t has resulted in digitization
o f approxim ately 50 open reels
and 2 0 0 analog cassettes since
2012. Many historical sound re
cordings are a t risk o f loss due to
th e in s ta b ility o f th e materials
and the near obsolescence o f the
technology required to play older
formats, including cylinders, discs,
and reels. Emily Afanador w ith
th e Oreon Folklife N etw ork, a
partner on the grant, is com plet
ing a docum entary short on the
project and its e ffo rt to preserve
historic tribal sound recordings.

project raises awareness o f a sig
nificant body o f Oregon’s cultural
heritage materias.

sacred foods th a t nourish our
bodies and is ju s t like a medicine

Department has been awarded
“Endangered Language Fund
Grant”
The goal o f Working w ith Kiksht
Legacies is to develop a strong
base o f volunteers in the Kiksht
language to produce materials fo r
future scholarship. Materials have
been collected fo r oer 10 years
and ove r 2 0 0 recordings have
been produced because o f the
fo re sig te d n e ss o f p a st K iksht
speakers. While there was a con
centrated e ffo rt to teach Kisht to
tw o apprentices, other duties Im
peded upon the tim e spent w ith
the elders. However, in 10 short
years from year one, n o t allowing
the apperntices to record the lan
guage to year 10 the elders were
story telling and made video clips.
The elders did w hat the y could
make sure the y could preserve
the language in Its m ost natural
state.
To develop this language base o f
volunteers:
1. P a rtic ip a n ts w ill gain th e
necessry knowledge to access
and utilize existing Kiksht docu
mentation and techniques fo r fu r
th e r docum enting th e ir knowl
edge o f the Kiksht documenta
tion.
2. Participants will deelop a learn
ing plan fo r curent adult learners
o f Kiksht, which can be modified
as needed fo r subsequent pro
gram s focu sed m ore on child
learners and families.
