Page 10 Spilyay Tymoo, Warm Springs, Oregon March 4, 2015 Tribes to intervene in oil terminal debate Leaders from the Colum- bia River Inter-Tribal Fish Commission served notice to the Tesoro-Savage oil termi- nal proposal by moving to in- tervene in Washington’s En- ergy Facility Site Evaluation Council proceedings. CRITFC cited the proposed terminal’s assortment of risks to critical salmon habitat and threats from oil trains to the Columbia River and tribal fish- ing communities. “Today’s intervention re- flects our commitment to pro- tect the Columbia River and its resources and communi- ties,” said Paul Lumley, CRITFC executive director. “The last thing the Colum- bia River and its communi- ties need is a constant stream of dirty and dangerous trains and barges coming and going from the Tesoro-Savage ter- minal. The tribes will not sit idly by as this threat risks the hard-fought salmon recovery efforts the region has accom- plished.” For three decades, CRITFC and its member tribes—War m Springs, Umatilla, Yakama and Nez Perce—have been working toward sustainable fisheries throughout the region. The Tesoro-Savage project, individually and col- lectively with the multitude of other energy transportation proposals, will cause signifi- cant adverse effects to the river and its systems, includ- ing fish, wildlife, water qual- ity, air quality and treaty-pro- tected fisheries, Lumley said. Increasing the number of oil trains traveling along the Columbia River would in- crease the risk of derailments, potentially catastrophic explo- sions and rail crossing acci- dents to tribal communities living and fishing along the river.
