the Kennewick Man.

on September 10.
The paper said the 688-
page book makes the case
that Kennewick Man was not
a “longtime resident” o f the
area in Washington where he
died nearly 10,000 years ago.
Scientists instead suggest
that he may have come to the
area from fu rth e r up th e

Alaska.
“K ennew ick Man could
not have been a longtime resi­
dent o f the area w here he
was found, but instead lived
m ost o f his adult life some­
where along the N orthw est

ered by the Native American
Graves Protection and Repa­
triation Act. The book is the
result o f 16 days o f studies
th a t w ere conducted after
scientists won the case.
The U.S. Army Corps o f
Engineers retains custody o f
the remains and hasn’t deter­
mined what to do with them.
Scientists, however, want to
continue further studies.
As part o f the process, the
BIA will hold a scoping meet­
ing in Medford on February
3. The agency will then issue
a draft ElS— and, eventually,
a final ElS——but there is no
timeline for a decision.
Generally, land placed in
trust after 1988 can’t be used
