Community Counseling brings
Washat to Youth Villages
Roots progam sees good student turnout

Springs Roots program.
That is more than twice as
many students who partici
pated in Warm Springs alter
native education program last
year.
Teachers Dawn Smith and
Earl Simmons spent the sum
mer gathering information on
the tribal natural and cultural
resources.
The material is the basis
for the class, focusing on the
career paths available in natu
ral resources.
‘W e’ve also been making
contacts in the natural re
source field,” D aw n said,
“We’ve found lots o f great
people w ho are ready and
willing to help out. We are
very grateful.’’’
The first class was a hands-
on introduction to agriculture,
focusing on the Oregon state
agriculture standards for soils,
plants, mechanics and power,
w ith a little c o n stru c tio n
thrown in.

major challenge, Dawn said.
“I ’ve gained a whole, new ap
preciation for the level o f ex
pertise and dedication o f the
people and programs o f the
C o nfederated Tribes,” she
said.
“As an elem entary staff
person all these years, I was
so focused on the kids in my
charge, I didn’t get the chance
to look around and see the
wonderful and hopeful things
that were happening around
us all.”
In her research, she found
the tribes have a history o f
extensive collaborative efforts
stretching across the country.
“I ’ve found extensive re
ports, letters, publications,
interviews and presentations
by individuals and tribal de
partments that m ust have sig
nificantly influenced everyone
they touched,” Smith said.
“Every search uncovered

Arts Commission, Cultural
Trust meet in Warm Springs
The Oregon Cultural Trust
and the Oregon Arts Com
mission visited Warm Springs
last week.
They held a joint meeting
at K ah-Nee-Ta Resort, fol
low ing a recep tio n at the
Museum at Warm Springs.
More than 2:000
cyclists passed through
the reservation last
week. The tour was part
of the annual week-long
Cycle Oregon ride.
In Central Oregon the
riders went from The
Dalles, to Dufur and the
Tygh Valley.

its seven-day ride. The
Cycle Oregon fund
supports projects in
communities where they
