A head injury is any traum a
th at injures the scalp, skull or
brain. T he injury may be only
a m in o r b u m p on th e skull
o r a serious brain injury.
H ead injury can be either
closed o r op en (penetrating).
• A c lo s e d h e a d in ju ry
m eans y ou received a hard
blow to the head from strik
ing an object b u t the object
did n o t break the skull.
■ A n open, o r penetrating,
head injury m eans you hit or
w ere h it w ith an object th at
broke the skull and entered
the brain.
H ead injuries include:
• C o n c u s s io n th e m o s t
c o m m o n type o f traum atic
b ra in in ju ry , in w h ic h th e
brain is shaken.
• Scalp w ounds, and skull
fractures.
H ead injuries m ay cause
bleeding:
• In the brain tissue;
■ In th e layers th a t su r
ro u n d the brain.
C om m on causes o f head
injury include:
A ccidents at hom e, w ork,
o u td o o rs, ,or w hile playing
sports; falls, physical assault,
and traffic accidents.
M ost o f these injuries are
m inor because the skull p ro
tects the brain. Som e injuries
are severe enough to require
a stay in the hospital.

lice. T he lifespan o f average
h e a d lice is ro u g h ly 40-45
days.
W hat to look for?
N its - these are lice eggs.
T h e y are ov al a n d usu ally
yellow to w hite b u t in darker
hair, they’re darker. N its take
a bout a week to hatch.
Nym/>/> - th e n it h a tc h es
in to a b a b y lo u se called a
nym ph. I t looks like an adult
lo u se b u t is sm aller. T h e y
m ature in to adults in ab o u t
seven days after hatching. In
order to live, the nym ph feeds
o n blood.
.A dult House - T h e a d u lt
louse is a b o u t the size o f a
sesam e seed, has six legs, and
is tan to grayish-white color
(alm ost like dan d ru ff). F o r
people w ith darker hair color,
the lice are darker. Fem ales
lay nits; usually they are big
ger than the males. T h e adult
lice can live up to 30 days o n
a person’s head. To live, they
feed o n b lo o d . I f th ey fall
o ff a person, it dies w ithin 2
days.
W ho g e ts h ead lice?
T he m ost com m on age for
head lice is 3-10 years o f age,
because o f the close contact
w ith th e ir frien d s (sh arin g
hats, coats, clothes, hair ties,
etc.) B ut anyone at any age
can get head lice. O th er,co n
tact can be thro u g h com bs,
brushes, towels, lying on b ed
ding, pillows, couches, carpet
o r a stuffed anim al th at has
recendy been in contact w ith
a person w ith lice.
Sym p tom s and treatm ent
Sym ptom s o f having head
lice include: A tickling feeling
th ro u g h o u t your head, itch
ing (which is caused by an al
lergic reaction to the bite o f
the bug), sores on head, and
irritability.
I f your loved one has the
parasite, please do the follow
ing as treatm ent:
• Wash all clothing, bedding
and vacuum the carpeted ar
eas ( b e d r o o m a n d liv in g
room )
• G e t o v e r th e c o u n te r
m ed icin e fo r tre a tm e n t (at

for the adult bugs, n o t the n it/
eggs-
• C om b through the hair
