Changes to fire camp crews this season
Warm Springs Fire Man
agement this year is making
m ajor changes to its camp
crew program.
The changes will create a
more highly trained and ver
satile camp crew program ,
capable o f resp o n d in g to
various FEMA emergencies
in addition to fires, said Wil
liam W ilson, assistant Fire
Management Officer-Logis
tics.
Starting this year, camp
Crew m em bers, like oth er
’fire-fighting personnel, will be
required to have à valid Red
Card.
The card shows that the
person is qualified for certain
aspects o f fire fighting, in
cluding the camp crew duties.
T h e qualification require
ments will be: Incident Com-
m and System 100, Leader
ship 180, and Incident Sys-
tem 700. Fire Management
will provide the necessary
training.
Fire Management will re
quire pre-employment drug
testing prior to camp crew
training and orientation.
Because o f these added
training requirem ents, the
n u m b er o f W arm Springs
camp crews will be reduced
for th e 2014 season, said
Wilson.
T h ere will be five Fire
Management camp crews this
year, with 14 m em bers per
crew. T he 14 m ém bers in
clude three alternates. Last
year there were nine crews.
In past years there were as
many as eleven.
Fire Management plans to
increase the number o f crews
in coming years, as the new
qualification requirements are
implemented, Wilson said.
The camp crew members
for 2014 will be selected from
the crews o f previous years.
Fire M anagement chose six
candidate crew bosses who
will organize the crews. I f
necessary, one o f the six will
be absorbed into one o f the
five crews.
T h e crew b o sses are:
G e ra ld C ard en as, L ouis
LeClaire, M onty McKinley,
Alberto Briseno, Jose B arrera.
and Tony T hom pson. The
candidates are responsible for
providing the names o f the
crews they wish to take out.
The bosses will also be respon
sible for the crew members
filling o u t th e n ecessary
form s for qualification and
training.
The crews will be based on
w ho provides the inform a
tion first, as to getting their
crews qualified for Red Cards.
From the Secretary-Treasurer
In ad d itio n to th e five
camp crews, there will be a
pre-selected group o f 20 to
25 alternates who will be in
vited to p articipate in the
2014 camp crew program .
The alternates will also need
to be qualified to have a Red
Card.
Orientation for the camp
crews will consist o f one day
o f training and one day o f
filling out the required hire
paperwork and other admin
istrative work.
There will be a five-day
Supervisor Crew Training.
