ticle says, “It is an ancient cer
emony o f thanksgiving for
the food provided for them
for the coming year— espe
cially the roots that still form
a substantial p a rt o f their
diet.”
The article was published
in April 1953 in The Big Haul,
a trucking company magazine
out o f Portland.

Faye says, but the pictures are
very interesting.
Sixty years ago the author
o f the article gave his opin
ion: “With the passing o f the
older Warm Springs Indians,
the Root Festival seems des
tined for oblivion...”
The author obviously un
derestimated the strength o f
the tribal traditions from time
immemorial.
