2013 may be worst fire season in decade

T h e 2013 season m ay be
m a tc h e d o nly by th e 2002
B iscuit Fire th at scorched a
half-m illion acres and burned
until the end o f the year, said
K itzhaber, w ho was also gov
ern o r during th at fire. H e said
the lightning-sparked Douglas
C o m p le x o f w ild f ir e s , in
Southern O regon, is the “N o.
1 (wildfire) concern for the
federal governm ent.”
“T his is one o f the w orst
fire se a so n s w e ’v e h a d in
years, p ro b a b ly w orse th an
2002,” K itz h a b e r said in a
p h o n e interview from G len
dale, outside O reg o n ’s largest
wildfire.”
K itzhaber said the state is
seeking assistance from other
states and Canada and said he
will b r ie f th e lead ersh ip o f
the Legislature this w eekend
o n th e c o n d itio n s o f tw o
wildfires, including one b u rn
ing m ore th an 30,000 acres
in southw est O regon.
U.S. Sens. R on W yden and
J e ff M erkley also toured the
area. T here w ere about 5,200
people w orking on the blaze,
including private p erso n n el
a n d th e O r e g o n N a tio n a l
G uard. R esidents from 105
houses got evacuation notices
last week, b u t the im proving
situation allowed 45 to return.
Sm oke from the wildfires
has w o rsen ed air quality to
unhealthy-to-hazardous levels
across southw est O regon and
into N o rth e rn California for
the past week. O u td o o r ac
tivities have b e en canceled
a n d hospitals have seen an
u p tic k in em erg en cy ro o m
visits due to breathing com
plaints.
“ I t ’s in c r e d ib ly sm o k y
w hen you get dow n to G len
dale,” K itzhaber said. “We’re
m o n ito rin g fo r air quality. '
(Smoke was) just starting to
rise w hen I left.”
N early 4,500 firefighters
statewide have been battling
the blazes th at have chaired
m o re th a n 40,000 acres o f
forestland in the state.
K itzhaber praised the in
teragency coordination on the
fires b u t said one o f his chief
c o n ce rn s is th e Big W indy
com plex o f fires in Josephine
and Curry counties, w hich has
n o t b e e n c o n ta in e d a n d is
burn in g on m ore than 6,000
acres. 1

“ T h e c o n c e n tr a tio n o f

Blaldnger said. “T h a t is why
w e need an urban-type solu
tio n like a sew er o r cluster
systems.”
Blakinger said tap w ater in
La Pine is safe to drink, w ith
e ith er c o n ta m in a tio n low er
than state health guidelines or
th e ir w ells d ra w in g w a te r
from sources deeper th an the
tainted groundw ater.
Officials said the situation
is n o t yet a public-health risk,
b u t the com m ittee has called
for further study on the p o
tential im pacts to the L ittle
D eschutes River, and say the
rural areas require solutions
for dealing w ith sewage con
tam inants m ore like w hat is
used in urban areas.
“T h ere is a risk, b u t w e
d o n ’t kn o w h o w big it is,”

an increasing contam ination
o f the groundw ater, b u t we
believe w e are in a position
to h e ad it o f f b e fo re it b e
