Klamath task force meets again, with no agreement

T h e group includes rep­
resentatives from the parties
w ith an interest in the basin’s
w a te r: fa rm e rs , ra n c h e rs,
conservationists, tribal m em ­
bers, g o v e rn m e n t agencies
and pow er utilities.
T h e y h a v e tw o m o re
m eetings b efo re a Septem ­
b e r deadline to m ake recom ­
m endations to W yden.

“T h e river is degraded be­
c a u se o f a fe d e ra l w a te r

m iles u p riv e r,” said M ike
O r c u t t, d i r e c to r o f th e
H o o p a Valley tribe’s fisher­
ies departm ent.

in Ju n e pleaded for concilia­
tion.

e x p re s s e d h o p e it w o u ld
reach solutions.
“W e’re facing th e w orst
fire year in 25 years and the
w orst w ater year in probably
25 years, p utting enorm ous
pressure on all o f us,’’ he said.

hydroelectric dam s o n the

W yden said at a hearing
in Ju n e th at a price tag once
set at $1 billion and then low ­
ered to $800 m illion to fi­
n a n ce th e a g reem en ts, in ­
cluding hab itat restoration,

ting $250 million from it was
a g o o d start and suggested
shedding a quarter to a third
m ore.

longer has a place to o p ­

tr ib a l g o v e r n m e n t is
hom eless.”
T h e tribe has o th er of­
fices w here officials will
try to find space until the
a d m in istratio n b u ilding
can be rebuilt. T he tribe
had started planning for
a new go v ern m en t cen­
ter, so it has a head start
o n th e r e p la c e m e n t,
Finley said.
