regulators in assessing the is
sues facing certain Ceded
Lands hunting units, in order
to come up with the appro
priate regulation, Brunoe said.
By the Treaty of 1855 the
Wasco and Warm Springs
tribes ceded ownership claim
to approximately 10 million
acres of aboriginal lands, now
called the Ceded Lands. The
tribes, however, maintain the
right to hunt, fish and gather
on the Ceded Lands.
At the Council meeting
last week elder Bruce Jim, of
the Fish and Wildlife Com
tribe-state co-management
mittee, said the tribes at times
should be aggressive in assert
ing management authority on
the Ceded Lands.
The tribes are fortunate to
have elders who still recall
many areas o f the Ceded
Lands that were and remain
usual and accustomed fishing,
hunting and gathering areas.
Exercising management helps
to keep these off-reservation
rights strong, Jim said.
“The tribes are not out of
line in being aggressive with
these rights,” he said.
There was some discus
sion at Council of the “treaty
o f 1865,” a strange docu
ment that purported to extin
guish tribal rights off the res
ervation and confine the
members to the reservation.

course will take place over a
five-day period and there is
a $10 class fee.
The classes will be con
ducted from 1-4:30 p.m.,

The field day will be from
9 a.m —4 p.m. on August 8
at the Warm Springs Police
Department Shitike Creek
shooting range. A signed per
mission slip from guardians
is mandatory. The final class
review and test will be from
1 p.m.-4:30 p.m. on August

The Tribal Council heard
an update from Brunoe and

rock that could be sold from
Government Rock and other
tribally-owned properties at
the Gorge.
The initial report was fairly
encouraging as to the possible
selling price and the market
demand. Council suggested
that Brunoe and Henrickson
continue to negotiate with
potential buyers and report
back to Council in August.
Field trip
to Lava Lanes
Recreation is taking kids
on a field trip to Lava Lanes
for bowling. Kids will need to
bring money for bowling,
shoe rental and additional
spending money and a sack
lunch.
They will leave at 9 a.m.
and return by 4:30. Sign kids
up at the Recreation Depart
ment.

from hunter surveys is valu
able for biologists, wildlife
committee and tribal coun

sions. By reporting, you are

populations and helping en
hance hunting opportunities.

The Warm Springs
Wildlife Department.
Platform and hook and line fishing in Zone 6 has
re-opened to seven days per week. The open area is
all of Zone 6.
Allowable gear is hoopnets, dipnets and hook and
line.
The tribe will be finishing the ceremonial fishery
starting July 29 and continuing at least through August
3. Since Sales are not allowed during the ceremonial
season there will be no sales in Zone 6 platform and
hook and line fisheries starting at 6 p.m. Saturday July
27. Fish may be retained for subsistence purposes.
Allowed harvest is salmon, steelhead, shad, yellow
perch, bass, walleye, catfish and carp. Sturgeon may
be kept for subsistence use. Legal-size sturgeon are
between 38 and 54 inches fork length in the Bonneville
Pool and between 43 and 54 inches fork length in The
Dalles and John Day pools. Commercial sales will open
at a later time in August after the ceremonial fishery
has ended. Please stay tuned for the upcoming an
nouncement.

four miles .downstream of Bonneville Dam.

Commercial Fisheries in Zone 6
The sixth gillnet period for summer chinook and
sockeyé opened on Monday, July 22’ and closes at 6
p.m., this Thursday, July 25 for a total of three nights.
The open area is all of Zone 6. There is no mesh size
restriction in this fishery. Allowable sales are chinook,
sockeye, steelhead, shad, walleye, carp, catfish, bass,
and yellow perch. These fish may be sold or kept for
subsistence purposes. Sturgeon may only be kept for
subsistence use. Legal-size sturgeon are between 38
and 54 inches fork length in the Bonneville Pool and
between 43 and 54 inches fork length in The Dalles
and John Day pools. River mouth and dam sanctuar
ies applicable to gill nets are in effect for this fishery.
