MAC Recreation needs Warm Springs vote
By Michele Gemelas
The Madras Aquatic Cen
ter Recreation D istrict pro
posed 5-year tax levy failed
by only 171 votes in the N o
v em b er electio n , and the
MAC B oard is asking for
Warm Springs voters to help
get this important levy passed.
The levy will be on the May
ballot that will arrive in the
mailboxes o f registered vot
ers on May 4. T h e MAC
Recreation District has made
it clear: This operating levy
needs Warm Springs votes in
order to pass.
H ere are som e o f the
q uestions asked by W arm
Springs residents:
Q uestion: Who can vote
o n th is MAC O p e ratio n s
Levy?
A ny registered v o ter in
Oregon, 18 or older, who is
living in Jefferson County in
the 509-J school district is also
w ith in th e MAC D is tric t
boundary and can vote on
this levy. This includes most
Warm Springs residents. This
levy will be on the State bal
lot that will arrive in the mail
May 4.
Q u e s tio n : W hen can I
vote?
As soon as your ballot ar
rives in the mail! The earlier,
the better, but all ballots must
be turned in by election day
May 21.
Q uestion: How do I vote?
Either mail in your ballot
or take it to an authorized
ballot box location before
May 21.
Q u e s tio n : H ow m uch
will this levy cost tribal mem
bers living on thè reservation
or renting in Madras?
Reservation residents and
renters who do n ot pay prop
erty tax will not be affected
by the levy.
Q uestion: Why should I
vote for this? W hat is in it for
me?
The m ost im portant rea
sons are that the MAC Rec
reation District provides lots
o f op p o rtu n ities to W arm
Springs residents for fitness,
healthy activities in and out
o f the water and learning to
swim in a safe environment.
It is also a great place to
hold birthday parties, there
are many running/race op
portunities, A N D it helps to
sustain the business commu
nity in Jefferson County. We
need our gas stations, restau
rants, m otels, etc. to keep
their doors open and thrive.
Also, the Warm Springs Boys
and Girls Club and various
other groups have rented the
facility for events.
Q u estion : W hat will this
tax levy fund?
The MAC Levy will elimi
nate the five-week MAC clo
sure that occurs each A pril/
May and will eliminate the
need for loans that are cur
rently borrowed each year to
keep the doors open. It will
also provide a maintenance
fund, and will expand the out
o f water recreation programs.
This year, Central Oregon
Seed, Inc. made a generous
donation to keep the doors
open in April, but this is a tem
porary measure for this year
only.
Q u e s tio n : W hy should
Warm Springs vote YES on
this levy?
W arm Springs residents
are participating in many o f
the recreational activities at
the MAC including adult soft-
ball, youth soccer, youth and
adult basketball, open gyms,
water polo, swim teams, and
more. A few brave folks have
even participated in the MAC
D ash Sprint Triathlon for the
last few years!
Having folks participate in
these activities is a great way
to im prove health and help
us to live longer.
Carolyn Harvey, O pera
tions M anager at the MAC
and form er Wellness Coordi
nator for the Confederated
T rib es o f W arm Springs,
would like to continue all o f
these healthy programs and
to increase the n um ber o f
Warm Springs participants in
these activities, but needs to
have the m oney to do so.
Currently these programs are
grant funded, but that fund
ing will expire. This five-year
Operations Levy will provide
continued funding for these
programs.
Every Warm Springs vote
is needed for this to pass, so I
please vote YES for the MAC
R ecreation D istrict O pera
tions Levy!

Oregon’s Greatest

the dramatic story of
