Preparing ground for the new school
The building site for the
new Warm Springs last Fri
day was blessed with Washat
and Shaker services.
The new school “is a re
newal o f our commitment to
o u r stu d e n ts,” said Jo d y
Calica, Secretary-Treasurer.
A W arm S prings k-8
school has been talked about
for 20 years, and the project
is finally becoming a reality,
Calica said.
Bobby Brunoe, director
o f Natural Resources, spoke
o f the personal significance
o f the school site. Growing
up, he said, his family had
farmland nearby. “We .were
always taught: education, edu
cation, education. My grand
father w ould be pro u d o f
this.”
Laurie Danzuka, school
board chairwoman, and Rick
Molitor, district superinten
dent, welcomed the commu
nity, expressing their appre
ciation for everyone who has
supported the k-8 project.
T h e S haker C h u rch
opened the ceremony, and
the Washat brought the bless
ing to a close.
T h e co n stru c tio n start
date is still set for .July. O n
th a t schedule, the school
would open for the fall term
o f 2014.

The delay has been financ
ing, in particular the USDA
loan that the tribes are apply
ing for.
The tribes are borrowing
$6.5 million. The tribes have
also designated approximately
$3.5 million in tribal funding
to the project.
T h e sc h o o l d istric t is
matching the amount with a
$10 m illio n c o n trib u tio n
funded through property tax.
The district last spring passed
a $26 million bond levy that
includes the portion for the
Warm Springs school. O ther
district projects are a p er

high school sports facilities.
In a recent development,
the school district decided
to split th e W arm Springs
portion o f the district bond

This was necessary, as the
USDA has taken longer than
expected, and th e d istrict
needs to start on the high
