MAC levy
When State voting ballots
arrive in the mail next tadnth,
W arm S p rin g s v o te rs in
JefferSon County will have an
opportunity to vote on the
M adras A q u atic C e n te r
(MAC) Recreation D istrict
Operations Levy once again.
This levy was supported by
Warm Springs voters in N o
vem ber, b ut lost overall by
171 votes. Supporters o f the
levy are asking the W arm
Springs voters to . send in a
Y es’ vote for this levy once
more.
S u p p o rt fro m W arm
Springs voters will assure that
there are plenty o f ways for
youth and adults to develop
healthy lifestyles through rec
reation. The .MAC Recre
ation D istrict wants to con
tinue o f offer a variety o f
choices for all ages, and this
vote is needed to reach that
goal and keep the programs
going. This levy will increase
the property taxes o f o ff—
reservation property owners
by 40 cents p er $1,000 o f
property value.
C urrently, th e MAC is
hom e to a variety o f recre
atio n al pro g ram s th a t are
funded by a grant from the
B ean F o u n d a tio n . W arm
Springs participants are par
ticipating in nearly all o f the
activities. A ‘Y es” vote for
the MAC Recreation D istrict
will allow these programs to
continue, even after the grant
runs out.
Current programs include
adult and youth basketball,
adult and youth soccer, open
gyms, volleyball, skateboard
ing events, 5 K / 10K races for
runners and walkers and the
very popular adult softball.
If the vote does not suc
ceed, these program s may
n e e d to b e can celled o r
dow nsized due to lack o f
funding.
In the past three years, the
MAC has been experiencing
a 5-week closure in April that
halts many o f the activities
at the MAC.
This year, Central Oregon
Seed Inc. has generously do
nated funds to keep the doors
open in April, but this is a tem
porary solution.
The proposed MAC Rec
reation D istrict O perations
Levy will keep th e facility
open 12 m onths o f the year
and keep in and out-of-water
programs going.
Supporters o f the opera
tio n s levy k n o w th a t th e
W arm Springs communities
are im portant to the success
o f this vote. Please be sure

Co ngratulatio ns,

Twenty-Sixth Tribal Council
was fair, ethical and honest
with solid integrity. W ith this
conclusion also come all past
and previous elections and
referendums.
As I have stated before
in previous elections, there
is literally no way any m em
ber o f the board can alter,
interfere o r change the re
sults o f the election w ithout
a c o a litio n o f th e o th e r

spiracy. Additionally, such
conspiracy w ould also have

present was in favor o f such
test, but the Tribal Council
decided it would dispel any
further questions from both
certain Tribal Council and
various com m unity m em

I am n ot sure o f the exact
reason or ground for the test,
b u t as L understood, Some
members o f the Tribal Coun
cil felt the board m em bers
needed to take the test be
cause they did n ot trust the
members o f the board, as did
som e of their constituents
from their district.
Accordingly, each m em
ber o f the E lection Board
took the test and all members
have passed the test. W ith
that said, we all can agree and
conclude the election for the
dagger stories are pretty far
fetched and some are totally
hilarious.
This year the election pro
cess was again monitored and
supervised by the BIA Super
intendent, Director o f G ov

ning, and w hen the results
were tallied the Tribal Secre-
tary-Treasurer/CEO.
