NCAI leader raises women’s security issue

followed Senate passage ear
lier this m onth o f the act
that continues to allow fund
ing for dom estic violence
programs and victims sup
port.
The bill, which the Sen
ate ap proved on a 78-22
vote, would allow American
Indian ' courts to prosecute
and sentence suspects in do
mestic violence cases w ho
are not American Indians.
Keel made the remark in
the State o f the Indian N a
tio n s ad d ress at the
Newseum in Washington.
The annual address fol

O b am a’s delivery o f the
State o f the Union. Obama
also urged the House to pass
the Violence Against Women
Act in his speech.
“T here is nothing m ore
im p o rtan t to tribal leaders
than the safety and well-be
ing o f tribal citizens,” said
K eel, a m e m b e r o f th e
Chickasaw N ation o f Okla
homa.
House Republican leaders
are working on their own ver
sion o f the act, which expired
in 2011.
