IHS honors Employee of the Year

Gadberry, CNA.

then .Alaska, and returned to
the reservation in 1997.
Lucy has worked at the
clinic since she m oved back
to Warm Springs. She was
n a m e d E m p lo y ee o f the
Year at IHS for her service
to patients, and her good
relationships with co-work-
ets at the clinic.
Lucy grew up in W arm
Springs. She is a graduate o f
M adras ■ H igh School. She
m et and m arried her hus
band Carl Leroy Gadberry,
who was driving a truck for
her sister’s trucking com
pany.
In 1984 she m oved to
Clovis, Calif., with her hus
band, w ho has family there.
In California Lucy took an
office job, working with N a
tive American people in that
region.
A fter a few years, Lucy
and her husband m oved to
Juneau, Alaska, w here his
parents w ere living. T hey
lived there for three years,
m oving back to California
w hen a family m em ber d e -.
veloped a m edical condi
tion.
In 1997 they moved back
to Warm Springs. Lucy had
been doing office work for

“I like working with our
people,” Lucy says. Being a
tribal m em ber helps her in
understanding and communi
cating about the issues facing
patients at the clinic.

The patients’ comm ents,
she said, “made me feel like
I ’m on the right path to mak
ing people fee! better.”
Lucy is a cancer survivor,
and has been cancer-free for
three years now. During her
treatment,, she had to travel
to St. Charles Medical Cen
t e r in Bend every day for six
- weeks, during winter.
W ithout family this would
have been even m ore o f a
challenge. As one o f ten chil
dren, “I had a lo t o f sup
port.” I

Young people who are in
terested in the medical field
should pursue a career in
health care, Lucy says. “I f
you have the in terest and
drive, then follow through,”
she says,

through the clinic who could
really benefit from that,” she
said.
The Warm Springs clinic
is an interesting and unique
place to work, Lucy says, be
cause o f the relationship be
tween the tribes and IHS. She
is hoping to see a similar re
lationship develop with the
Veterans Administration.
