Change fo r
Social Security,

By Yvonne Iverson
P ap er checks w ill be a
thing o f the past for those
who receive Social Security,
VA o r o th er federal pay
ments.
Beginning M arch 1 you
will need to sign up for direct

If
you
have received
u n e m p lo y
m e n t in th e ■
last few years you may be
familiar with the debit card
process.
A debit card is issued to
you by the governm ent and
the am ount is loaded on the
card each m onth. You can
then use the card for p u r
chases or go to an ATM to
get cash.
Your other option is to
w ork with a bank. “Checking
acco u n ts are also a g reat
value for consum ers. They
offer convenience, and mul
tiple ways to access/manage
their m oney and security,”
explains D on Pearson, Wells
Fargo regional president.
“In many cases, having di
rect deposit is one way to
waive a monthly service fee
on a checking account.”
This change will take place
for all Social Security retire
ment, disability, or survivors
benefits recipients, unless you
are one o f the very few who
qualifies for an exemption.
According to the Treasury
D epartm ent, they will grant
exceptions to the rule only in
rare circumstances.
A u to m atic w aivers are
granted to people born on or
before May 1, 1921.
Check recipients living in
rem ote areas w ithout suffi
cient banking infrastructure
may apply for a waiver, as well
as check recipients for whom
electronic paym ents w ould
impose a hardship due to a
mental impairment.
Waiver applications can be
requested by calling 800-333-
1795. T h is m ay be a big
change fo r your or someone
you know, and there may be
a learning curve w ith using a
debit card.
You can get m ore infor
mation by going online to:
www.GoDirect.org
O r call the U.S. Treasury
Electronic Payment Solution
Center’s toll-free helpline at
(800) 333-1795 or pay a visit
to your local banker.
