New meals program at Warm Springs Jail
T he inmates at the Warm
Springs J ail will be eating bet
ter meals starting soon.
T hrough the new meals
program, the tribes will also
save about $30,000 per year,
said Stan Suenaga, director
o f tribal Public Safety.
The jail will begin receiv
ing meals prepared by inm ates,
at the. D eer Ridge C orrec
tional Institute near Madras.
In the past the jail con
tracted for meals with a cor
rectional facility in Washing
ton- The frozen meals arrived
at the jail by semi-truck.
The Deer Ridge meals pro
gram offers a bigger selec
tio n , and m o re n u tritio u s
meals, Suenaga said. The de
livery distance is much shorter
from D eer Ridge, adding to
thes savings.
T he jail meals budget is
about $105,000 per year. By
contracting with Deer, Ridge
for meals, the cost will be cut
by a b o u t a th ird , said
Suenaga, who presented the
proposal to Tribal Council.
' Council unanimously ap
proved the change.
The Warm Springs Jail is
a BIA facility, operated by the
tribes. There are on average
about 30 inmates housed at
the jail.

recruited by other states to

School Construction Update
Two Design Guidance Teams are
working hard on the plans for our new
school facilities in all of our communities.
These dedicated teams of district staff and
community members are meeting every
week to lead the charge.
“There are two really terrific groups of
people with great ideas,” said Dave Fishel,
partner of Wenaha Group, the firm that
is leading JCSD’s school bond design and
construction projects. “We’re even visiting
other districts and looking at similar
buildings to understand what we need.
We’ve really been digging into the details.”
Several community meetings are also
taking place to provide Jefferson County
families and residents with a chance to
share their input and hear how the projects
are going.
“It’s been very clear that, everyone really
wants what’s heist for the kids in Madras
and Warm Springs,” said Fishel,
