Finishing up w ith

their intersection.
The Hollywood-Tenino

the BIA infrastructure bud

W inning season for M H S football team
By W iM Robbins
For the Spilyay Tymoo
O ne play was all it took to
set the tone and establish the
theme for last Friday night’s
round-one playoff game be
tween the Madras White Buf
faloes and the Scappoose In
dians.
After Madras received thè
initial kickoff, the Buffs of
fense saw their first of six in
terceptions. A nd it was
ScappoOse who would turn an
even mix of pass and run and
defense into a 50-6 win.
The Buffs would try their
hardest, but no matter what
they did, or who got the ball,
it was Scappoose who was al
ways there to make the stop.
Madras did run the ball
and was able to slow down
the lightning fast attack o f
their opponent. But in the
end it was just too much.
There were too many weap
ons and too many turnovers
for Madras to succeed.
Very good season
MHS head football coach
Rick Wells said ,the game’s
outcome was not nearly as
im p o rtan t as the team s
progress this season.
Talking about w hat he
wanted his players to gain
from this playoff experience,
Wells said, “Ultimately I want
them to feel, when they leave
the field, and no matter what
the score, that their experi
ence as a Madras football
player this year was awe
some.”1

In many ways that state
ment is applies to this year’s
team.
With Coach Wells leading
the charge the Madras White
Buffalo football team went
farther than anyone had an
ticipated.
They went head- to head
with some o f the state’s best,
and theoutcomes were often
exactly what Wells wanted to
see.
Game after game Wells
stuck to his theme o f “Be
great,” and the team bought
into it.
“They believe now,” he
said. “They are more confi
dent that they have learned
how to better execute what
they are supposed to do.”
It was that theme of “Be
Great” that carried the team
into unknown territory; and
though they may have come
growth.
After Friday’s loss, and
after all was said and done,
Coach Wells gathered his
team at mid field just as he
had done all year, and sang
the praises of this team that
had fought so hard to get to
where they, were.
He reassured them that
even though the scoreboard
said differently, they were all
winners and will remain that
way for life if they remem
ber those simple words, “Be
Great.”
There were a few tears,
and emotions were high, but
even in the m idst o f the
agony th at defeat brings,
there was still a light shining
brightly that will no doubt
motivate and light the way for
the next team to “Be Great.”
The season was a great one
for the White Buffs and the
u p sh o rt at tim es score-w ise,
th e y e x c e lle d in p e r s o n a l
even better..
