Exciting time
fo r OSU
football fans
From the Reservation Runners
By Yvonne Iverson
There is hope and excite
ment building for the Beaver
Believers.
The Oregon State Football
team

Speaks
wins in a row
and no losses
to tie the University o f O r
egon for the top spot in the
Pac 12 Conference.
Beaver
fans
have
struggled through the past
two losing seasons, putting up
with ridicule and digs from
their Civil War opponents, but
things are looking up for the
2012 season.
After OSU’s win over the
University o f Arizona last
Saturday the com m ents
started flying on Facebook
and the excitement was in the
air.
“I am so happy, giddy,
stoked... Nobody can rain on
my parade tonight,” Rebecca
Soliz said after the win.
OSU alum n Celeste
Whitewolf shared, “I love it.
This has been great, follow
ing the game with other be
lievers”.
E ven true D ucks fans
were commenting on the Bea
vers game.
“The Beavers kinda im
pressed me, showed some
heart and earned that win,”
said James Arthur.
T he wins for O regon
teams may keep the peace in
split households, but come
November 24, when the two
teams meet in Corvallis, the
war will resume.
According to Jessie Lyons,
“It doesn’t matter if you are
a D uck’s fan or a Beaver
Believer, either way it has
been a season to be a fan of
college football in the State
of Oregon.”
The next deadline to
submit items fo r publi
cation in the Spilyay is
Friday, Oct. 12. Thank
you for writing!

Dear family, relatives and
friends,
O n b eh a lf o f the
H ood To Coast Team,
“Reservation R unners”
and myself, I would like
to take this opportunity to
thank everyone for their
support throughout the
year.
We had another suc
cessful year and everyone
had a good time. Thank
you all for the opportunity
to participate, because
without your help, it would
not have been possible.
First of all, let me say
“Thank You” to our spon
sors: Warm Springs Com
posite Products, Warm
Springs Ventures, Brunoe
L ogging, K ah-N ee-T a
High D esert Resort and
Warm Springs Market.
And, of course, to all of
the families whose support
is vital to our success.
We consider it a success
if we finish the race. The
team completed the race in
30 hours, 54 minutes and 07
seconds, just 14 minutes
over our anticipated finish
time. So close...
The team members this
year
were:
M onica
Sampson, Jordan Leonard,
Leslie
D avis, Jaym e
Schricker, Haley Brownson,
Karlen Yallup, Ryan Smith,
Lex
A nguiano,
D on
Courtney, Je ff A nspach,
Adam Haas and Joe Lewis.
Joe and Karlen were our last
minute recruits this year and
o f course, they helped us
out a lot!
Big thank you to the team
members for the donations
to the raffle, plus the Mu
seum at W arm Springs,
Lyda Rhoan and Krysta
Rhoan for their help.
As always, everyone got
along ju st great. T h at
makes the whole event so
much better for everyone
when that happens. So,
thank you everyone, for
being who you are!
We just got word that
the team has secured a
spot in next year’s Hood to
Coast. How exciting! They
finished the relay within
half-an-hour o f their an
ticipated finish time (HTC
estimate o f when the team
should finish); teams that
do th at have automatic
entry into next year’s HTC.
This is the first time
they have done this, so we
consider ourselves very for
tunate. Be on the lookout
for fund-raisers to help the
team out again for next
year’s event. As long as we
are able to secure a spot
in H o o d to Coast, and
people arè willing to do it,
we will continue to submit
our name.
I would just like to say
that if my m other were
here, she would have been
one of our biggest support
ers. She believed in. anyone
that; raised th eir own
m oney and as long as
Someone was willing to do
that, she was willing to help.
Thank you, Mom, for giv
ing me the courage to con
tinue on...
Thank you, everyone! '

For hospitality
A very p ro fo u n d and
heartfelt thank you to the
members o f the Confeder
ated Tribes of Warm Springs.
Much to my shame this has
been late in coming.
Over the last few years I
have been driving groups
sponsored by the World Af
fairs of Oregon to the Warm
Springs Reservation for meet
ings.
So far this year I have
b ro u g h t a group from
Belarus, whose focus was
“Green Turisum.”
Mr. Wewa and the wonder
ful staff greeted us warmly,
at the museum. It was the
first time I had Indian tacos
(very tasty).
The other group included
minorities of European coun
tries. A very special thanks to
the folks at the Eagle Cross
ing restaurant. On the spur
o f the moment, Brenda was
able to organize a kayak ad
venture for some of the visi
tors. The icing on the cake
was when the camp host at
Indian park shared his knowl
edge and wisdom with the
group when they got back to
shore. (Yes it was my little bus
going down that steep road).
O nce again let me give
everyone my humble thank
you.
Sincerely, Greg Corey,
fleet manager, Vango Trans
portation & Tours.

Fraud alert, and ways to avoid being cheated
By Bruce Engle

Conventional wisdom has
it that we will often do for
our kids what we won’t do
for ourselves. M ost o f us
have been there; done that.
A college savings account
can be successfully built up
to a significant amount be
cause of that phenomenon.
Keys to success for those
accounts:
• The account should be
in the child’s name.
• The child should know
that.
• O nly deposits are al
lowed. Withdrawals must be
prohibited until after high
school graduation.
■ Everybody must respect
the bargain.
• P aren ts, relatives,
friends, and the children may
deposit to the child’s account.
• Children must be con-
tinually brought into the pro
cess so they know the savings
account is to help them go to
college. That is a very impor
tant.
• Reminders prompt per
formance.
■ Financial literacy should
be included in their school
ing from first grade through
high school graduation. Pro
grams are available for each
grade level that schools can
integrate with existing unit and
lesson plans.
• Proceeds from the sav
ings account can be used for
technical training, junior col
lege, and university expenses.
Recent research has shown
that children for whom this
is done are about six times
mòre likely to do well in high
school and graduate from
college than are children for
whom this has not been done.
The money is only one of
the reasons for that success.
What an investment in our
kids!
