Casino on northern Indiana land

tribe w ith a m ajor casino in
so u th w e ste rn M ichigan has
included an o th e r casino in its
developm ent plan fo r land it
ow ns in n o rth ern Indiana.
T he P okagon B and o f
P o ta w a to m i I n d ia n s p la n s
w h at it calls a tribal village for
th e 164-acre site o n S o u th
B e n d ’s s o u th side w ith 44
housing units and health ser­
vice an d trib al g o v e rn m e n t
facilities.
T h e plan subm itted to the
federal B ureau o f Indian A f­
fairs also p ro p o ses a casino,
h o te l, m e e tin g s p a c e a n d
p a r k in g g a ra g e , a lth o u g h
P o k a g o n B a n d c h a ir m a n
M att W esaw said the trib e ’s
focus was o n providing ser­
vices for ab o u t 500 m em bers
living in the area.
“T h ere’s n o tim e fram e for
th e casino yet. I t’s n o t really
o n the burner,” W esaw said.
T h e tribe o pened its F our
W inds C asino in N e w B u f­
falo, M ich., a b o u t 30 m iles
from S outh B end, five years
ago. I t h as since o p e n e d a
sm a lle r sa te llite c a s in o in
H a rtfo rd , M ich., and is p re ­
p a rin g to o p e n a n o th e r in
D ow agiac, Mich.
“ W e’ve a c c o m p lis h e d a
fair a m o u n t o f stu ff fo r ou r
citizens w h o Eve in the state
o f M ichigan,” W esaw said.
“I t is no w tim e to b e in a
p osition to provide th o se ser­
vices for ou r citizens w h o Eve
in th e service area in In d i­
ana.”
T h e B ureau o f In d ian A f­
fairs has scheduled a Sept. 27
pubEc hearing in South B end
o n the tribe’s proposal.

w e will continue to co m m u ­
n ic a te w ith th e m as th e y
