ECE youth gain Head Start on Science
I n e N atural Resources
Branch recently brought les
sons in science to youth at the
Early Childhood Education
Center.
The lessons focused on
river life. The young students
ranged in age from 3 to 12.
Lisa Dubisar, fisheries bi
ologist for the- Environmen
tal Education and Outreach
program, taught the classes.
She started the lesson by
showing the kids pictures of
a river, illustrating important
habitat components like large
wood jams, overhanging veg
etation, and boulders for fish
and other aquatic organisms.
She then showed the kids
aquatic insects like stone flies,
an important food source for
fish. The insects were col
lected from Shitike Creek.
“W ith the older kids I
would explain more in depth
and talk about what a biolo
gist does,” Dubisar said. “A
lot o f the kids were fairly
young but it’s never too early
to start getting them inter
ested in the outdoors and in
science.”
Kirstin Ann Hisatake, di
rector o f Early Childhood
Education, commented, “We
appreciate Natural Resources
providing this important ex-
(( We’r e trying to get
more kids interested in
science... and in careers
potentially related to
natural resources.”

posure to science in their en
vironment.
“As the future stewards of
our Natural Resources, pro
viding children the opportu
nity to interact with and learn
about their environments is
an essential part o f school
readiness.”
The goal of the Environ
mental Education and Out
reach program is to help chil
dren gain a better understand
ing o f their natural world,
and to make a connection
about their role in it so they
can make a positive action in
their community.
“Basically we’re trying to
get more kids interested in the
outdoors, science, and in ca
reers potentially related to
n atural reso u rces,” said
Hisatake.
This coming fall the pro
gram will have an active role
in fifth-grade at Warm Spring
Elementary, when the project
“Salmon, Streams, and Sci
ence” will be underway.
