W.S. Telecom launches service

Warm Springs Telecom is
open for business.
A fter years o f planning,
the day is finally here.
It may seem like Warm
Springs Telecom has been
quiet since its big ribbon cut
ting event back in January,
but actually our Telecom
staff has been working hard
these past months gearing up
to offer quality telephone and
broadband service to reser
vation members and busi
nesses.
A few technical challenges
put the launch date for ser
vice behind by a few weeks,
but after many late nights and
hard work,, the Warm Springs
Telecom (WST) is now ready
for prime time.
Initially, service will be of
fered to those homes and
businesses located within cer
tain areas of the reservation
where there is direct sight of
the Miller Flats and Eagle
Butte towers.
Danica Greene, customer
service m anager, says,
“People in Greeley Heights,
Sunnyside, Wolfe Point, Elliott
H eights, T railer C ourts,

Creek, and other areas near

sign up for service.
“I f you live in any o f
these areas,” she said, “you
should drop by the new WST
C ustom er C enter at 4202
Holliday Street as soon as
possible to sign up. Even if
you are not sure, stop by and
visit with us or call 541-615-
0555. Service will be pro
vided on a first come, first
served basis and the first step
is to sign a customer agree
ment.”
In s talla tio n
WST operations manager
Jose Matanane explains what
it takes to install a customer:
“T here are a n um ber o f
steps to the installation, in
cluding putting a small an
tenna near the eve o f the
ro o f an d installing a sub
scriber unit on the side of the
home and placing a power
supply and back-up battery.
The installation will take at
least a few hours to complete
and we want to make sure
that everyone is happy with
the job.”
He adds, “To get people

hooked up as soon as pos
sible, we are contracting with
two experienced installation
companies from the Central
Oregon area. Along with our
own technical staff, this
means we’ll be able to have
three installation crews doing
installs each day.”
The company will continue
to build out the new network,
and as new areas are avail
able, new customers will be
able to be hooked up.
The more remote the area,
the later it will be before ser
vice is available. But the goal
o f the company is to serve
the entire reservation.
In fact, the fire lookout
tower at Sidwalter has been
reinforced to handle the in
stallation o f our Point to
Multi-Point radio and WST is
in the process o f extending
power to a new tower site
u n der d evelopm ent at
Schoolie Flats.

products available to meet
your needs and finances.
Telephone service is either
available as a stand-alone ser
vice, or bundled with basic
high-speed,
bro ad b an d
Internet.
“The best way to go is to
sign up for one o f our
bund led packages,” sayS
G abriel Walker, sales and
marketing coordinator.
“Basic phone service is al
ways a great deal, even on its’
own, but when you package
with Internet,'you get more
calling features and add-on
services at lower costs than
if you bought them individu
ally.”
For those who sign up for
phone service, the company
will be pro v id in g a free
corded telephone to everyone
who is connect to the tele
phone service.
Walker comments,- “I ’m
really happy th at Warm
Springs Telecom will be giv
ing out free telephone hand
sets.: I think that basic tele
phone service is a critical ser
vice and that everyone should
have a telephone in their
home in case o f emergen
cies, particularly for tribal el
ders who may need to reach
our fire and safety depart
ment.”
The phones will even work
during a pow er outage,
Walker says, “so police and
fire will only be a phone call
away.”
Basic telephone service
will include local calling, with
the option o f adding other
features. I
