The WIC staff (above) of the Confederated Tribes of Warm
Springs received a certificate of recognition recently from
the Oregon Health Authority.
The recognition is for exemplary breastfeeding promotion
and support. A goal of the Warm Springs WIC (Women,
Infant and Children) program is achieving the highest
breastfeeding rates in the nation. According to the U.S.
Surgeon General, “One of the most highly effective
preventive measures a mother can take to protect the
health of her infant and herself is to breasfeed.”

Overdue library books a growing problem
B y Craig Graham
Library Director
L ib raries are im p o rta n t.
They are a great source o f learn
ing, a place to find inspiration,
empowerment, or another world
in which to escape.
You can find books on alge
bra, starting your own business,
and origami. You can find books
on diabetes, substance abuse
and recovery, pregnancy and de
pression.
You can find books on N a
tive American history, Indian
basketry, and Indian Law. You
can find cookbooks, star gazing
books, resume and G ED books,
and children’s books. You can
find fiction, true crime, Wimpy
Kid, and Hunger Games books.
You can find all o f these and
many, many other books at your
Warm Springs Community Li
brary. Best o f all, it’s free to
you.
Now imagine you wanted to
check some o f these books out
but you couldn’t because they
w ere o v erd u e o r n ev er
returned. That is an issue your
library now faces.
Over 160 library books and
items are lost or overdue at this
time. Many are several weeks,
and in some cases months, over
due. Fifty-percent o f books
checked out right now are over
due or lost. This makes it diffi
cult for library employees who
have to make phone calls and
send out notices. And in many
cases we have no idea when, or
if, an overdue book will be re
turned because people don’t re
spond to the overdue notices.
As a consequence the library
has suspended fulfilling book re
quests and expanding its collec
tion.
Only w hen the majority o f
overdue items are returned or
paid for can the library continue
to expand its collection and fo
cus on other projects.
In order to get back on track
the library requires a reciprocal
relationship w ith you. T h at
means the library provides you
with services and items to check
out— and in retu rn you take
care o f your checked out items
and return them on time for
others to enjoy.
It means letting the library
know when you need more time
with an item, responding to the
library’s notices, paying for a
book if it gets lost or damaged,
etc.
Library staff make every ef
fort to notify people when they
have overdue items. But please
understand it is your responsi
bility to know when your items
are due.
I f you lose an item, if it be
comes damaged or stolen, it’s
your responsibility to contact the
library and-make arrangements
to pay for it. It is also your re-
Ä
jg
sponsibility to keep current con
tact information with the library.
I f your co n tact in fo rm atio n
changes you need to notify the
library.
Library staff wish to thank
all patrons who have returned
their books and paid their fines.
M ost people do return their li
brary items in good condition
and we really appreciate that.
We also wish to thank com
munity members for their gen
erous support in providing sub
scription donations, volunteer
time, and book and magazine
donations. We look forward to
a bright future with your sup
p o rt and cooperation. Thank
you.
Over 160 books are overdue
30 or more days
To encourage the return o f
Warm Springs Community Li
brary materials we will present,
in the next Spilyay, the list o f
books that are 30 or more days
overdue. I f you have any over
due books please, please return
them. These books belong to
