Jan. storms boost snowpack
(AP) — January storms have
provided a dramatic boost to
O reg o n 's previously anem ic
snowpack.
That’s good news not only for
ski resorts b u t for those who
depend on water from melting
snow to su p p o rt agriculture,
salmon habitat and hydroelec
tric power.
Hydrologist Jon Lea with the
U.S. Natural Resources Conser
vation Service said that Oregon’s
combined basins snowpack on
Jan. 14 was only 35 percent o f
average. Then by last week it was
70 percent o f average.
„
—-
Lea says the snowpack sta
tistics had been at record lows
and they’re still below average
so he hopes snow keeps accu
mulating. He says it’s good news
th a t snow pack increases oc
curred all around the state.
Lea says long-term forecasts
call for norm al to above-normal
precipitation and below-average
temperatures.
H e says Washington state’s
snowpack has been close to av
erage m ost o f the season, and
stood at 102 percent o f aver
age as o f Monday.
