By Duran Bobb
S p ilya y Tymoo
The specialized program that
gave Kah-Nee-Ta Resort G en
eral Manager Carlos Smith his
chance at advancement will be
re tu rn in g to the re s o rt this
spring.
“W hen I was 20, this p ro
gram gave me a start,” Smith
said. “I ’m going to be running
the program the same way. Be
cause the resort is ow ned by
tribal members, we’d like to pro
vide the same opportunity that
was given to me when I first
started.”
Five tribal members will be
chosen in early February to par
ticip ate in th e K ah -N ee-T a

Trainee Recruitment Program.
“We’re going to be looking at
work ethics, mainly,” Smith said.
“There will be no contracts. It’s
going to be an investment into
a tribal member employee. That
employee will be moved from
departm ent to departm ent to
find where their talents lie. They
could be gifted in the hotel or
fro n t desk, m aybe even as a
g o lf pro. I t will be basically
where they’re m ost passionate
about working. These employ
ees will become a serious asset
to the resort and the reserva
tion.”
E m ployees will be cross-
trained. “D oors will open for
them. We’ll sit down with them
personally and map out a plan
w ith them to discover where
their skill set is. I will let the
managers at Kah-Nee-Ta know
that this project is a priority for
me, that these will be specialized
workers.”
3 s u c c e s s s t o r ie s
Carlos Smith, Scott Moses,
and R usty Calica w ere three
participants the last time the
program was offered.
Carlos w ent on to manage
m ajor resorts in the Portland
area. Scott Moses w ent on to
becom e the R oom s D ivision
Manager, then became the head
o f Housing, and was voted on
to Tribal Council. Rusty Calica
is now the Head o f Purchasing
at the new Indian H ead Casino.
“I ’m going to open the pro
g ram w ith in H u m an R e
sources,” Smith said. “And from
there, we’ll see what the turn
out is. I ’d like to find tribal mem
bers who are go-getters, fired up
about working in such a giant
industry. For me, personally, I ’d
like to see more tribal member
managers here at the resort.”
Ideally, participants o f the
program should be at least 18
years o f age and m u st m eet
minimum requirements. Candi-
Youth work planning session
dates should have a high school
diploma and a valid driver’s li
cense. Participants should un
derstand that they will be lead
ing the teams and will be trained
in all areas o f the resort indus
try.
“They have to understand
that this is a hospitality industry.
This means working nights and
weekends, coming in to work
when someone doesn’t show up,
working holidays. It’s a tough
business and can really wear you
out. B ut our people really do
have perseverance and a good
work ethic.”
